The economic and social heft of the nation’s millennials can be felt in cities from coast to coast, and metro areas in states that border Mexico are no exception, according to a new survey commissioned by Havas PR North America.
The survey showed that Phoenix is in the mix of places that millennials in cities in California, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas think will be best for their generation.
“The increasing influence of Hispanic-Americans on every aspect of American life — from politics to media, fashion to entertainment — is felt most keenly in the four U.S. states bordering Mexico, a microcosm of the U.S. Hispanic community,” said the study.
The group surveyed 800 18- to 34-year-olds in the four states. The respondents were both Hispanic and non-Hispanic, dubbed “border millennials,” to get opinions on issues involving family, food, work and which 10 cities have the most potential for them.
“The highest-ranked cities have three commonalities: They are ethnic, affordable and youthful, including college towns as one anchor,” said Marian Salzman, CEO of Havas PR North America. “We all need to be keeping an eye on these cities as we think about where the next generation will flourish.”
Phoenix came in at No. 4 on the list in between Los Angeles (No. 3) and Austin (No. 5). At the top was San Antonio, followed by San Diego (No. 2). Phoenix was ahead of Austin (No. 5) and Albuquerque (No. 6). The last four cities in the ranking were Dallas-Fort Worth (No. 7), Houston (No. 8), San Francisco (No. 9) and Tucson (No. 10).
The survey also revealed that staying close to family was important to many respondents and that many said they’d never leave the Southwest. This was especially true for Hispanics (51 percent) versus non-Hispanics (44 percent).
