<p>The waterfront property includes two offshore islands, 4,000 feet of water frontage, and the Copper Beech Farm. The main house features 15,000 square feet of living space, with 12 bedrooms, 9 bathrooms, and a solarium, elevator, 10 fireplaces, and staff corridors. It has a six-car garage.</p>
<p>The 50 acres of grounds boasts two greenhouses, a tennis court, and an apple orchard. It also has a 75-foot-long heated pool.</p>

<p>TWIN ARROWS, Ariz. (AP) &#8212; New sets of twin arrows are beckoning travelers on Interstate 40 in northern Arizona.</p>
<p>The Navajo Nation has opened its first casino in the state, the Twin Arrows Navajo Casino Resort, named after an old trading post, diner and gas station where red and gold twin arrows aimed at the ground remind motorists of what once was the &#8220;best little&#8221; stop on the interstate.</p>
<p>The tribe is looking to the casino to boost its economy and spur development in the area, and has infused the new business with bits of Navajo culture and tradition. <p><strong>Today&#8217;s class struggles are increasingly taking place in cities, says Marxist and social theorist David Harvey. In an interview with SPIEGEL ONLINE, he discusses how urbanization will play a key role in social conflicts to come.</strong></p>
<p><strong>SPIEGEL ONLINE: </strong>Why should a Marxist be concerned about major cities instead of the working class these days?</p>
<p><strong>Harvey</strong> <strong>:</strong> Traditional Marxists admittedly see the avant-garde of the revolution in the industrial working class. However, since this is disappearing in the wake of Western deindustrialization, people are starting to grasp that urban conflicts will probably be decisive.</p>
<p><strong>SPIEGEL ONLINE: </strong>Over the course of the debt crisis, wages have decreased and social benefits have been slashed in Greece. Meanwhile, general strikes haven&#8217;t generated enough pressure to reverse the changes. Can this be viewed as evidence to support your theory that the traditional proletariat can no longer paralyze a state?</p>
<p><strong>Harvey</strong> <strong>:</strong> Yes. Today&#8217;s working class is part of a wider configuration of classes in which the struggle centers on the city itself. I replace the traditional concept of class struggle with the struggle of all those who produce and reproduce urban life. Unions must look at the urban everyday existence &#8212; a key for the social conflicts to come. In the United States, for example, this has prompted the AFL-CIO federation of labor organizations to start collaborating with domestic workers and migrants.</p>
<p><strong>SPIEGEL ONLINE: </strong>One of the basic theses of your book &#8220;Rebel Cities&#8221; is that urban development solves the problem of surplus capital. One builds streets and develops property on credit &#8212; and thereby attempts to escape recession.</p>
<p><strong>Harvey</strong> <strong>:</strong> A report from the Federal Reserve Bank in San Francisco recently put it that way, saying that the United States has historically always surmounted recessions by building houses and filling them with things. Urbanization can solve crises &#8212; but, more than anything, it is a way to get out of crises.</p>
<p><strong>SPIEGEL ONLINE: </strong>Are there current examples of this strategy?</p>
<p><strong>Harvey</strong> <strong>:</strong> Where are economies currently growing the fastest? In China and Turkey. What do we see in Istanbul? Cranes, everywhere. And when the crisis broke out in 2008, China lost 30 million jobs within six months owing to drops in US imports of consumer goods. But then the Chinese government created 27 million new jobs. How? The Chinese used their enormous trade surpluses to mount a gigantic urban-development and infrastructure program.</p>
<p><strong>SPIEGEL ONLINE: </strong>Isn&#8217;t such a short-notice crisis strategy aided by having an authoritarian regime like China&#8217;s?</p>
<p><strong>Harvey</strong> <strong>: </strong>Just imagine Obama ordering Goldman Sachs to give money to developers &#8212; good luck! But when a Chinese bank gets an order from the Central Committee of the Communist Party, it lends as much money as is desired. The Chinese government forced the banks to furnish development projects with large amounts of money.</p>
<p><strong>SPIEGEL ONLINE: </strong>Is this kind of urbanization necessarily a bad thing?</p>
<p><strong>Harvey</strong> <strong>:</strong> Urbanization is a channel through which surplus capital flows to build new cities for the upper class. It is a powerful process that newly defines what cities are about, as well as who can live there and who can&#8217;t. And it determines the quality of life in cities according to the stipulations of capital rather than those of people.</p>
<p><strong>SPIEGEL ONLINE: </strong>At the same time, in Istanbul, the state housing association Toki has built several large housing estates for the poor. Does this contradict your thesis?</p>
<p><strong>Harvey:</strong> No, because the residents of the so-called <em>Geçekondus</em>, the informal settlements lying at least on the city&#8217;s outskirts, were summarily transplanted into developing areas 30 kilometers (19 miles) from the downtown area &#8212; a massive expulsion.</p>
<p><strong>SPIEGEL ONLINE: </strong>The subprime crisis in the United States arose precisely out of the attempt to incorporate the lower classes into home-ownership. Reckless financial products were created so that even the poorest could obtain loans.</p>
<p><strong>Harvey</strong> <strong>:</strong> Give credit! &#8212; This battle cry pushed through the neoliberal agenda. But that&#8217;s nothing new. During the McCarthy Era after World War II, the ruling classes already recognized that home ownership plays an important role in preventing social unrest. On the one hand, left-wing activities were combated as un-American. On the other, building was promoted with financial and mortgage reforms. In the 1940s, the proportion of owner-occupied homes in the United States was still under 40 percent. In the 1960s, it was already at 65 percent. And during the last real estate boom in the 2000s, it was 70 percent. In the discussions about mortgage reforms at the end of the 1930s, a key sentence was: &#8220;Indebted homeowners don&#8217;t go on strike.&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>SPIEGEL ONLINE: </strong>In their book &#8220;Commonwealth,&#8221; philosophers Michael Hardt and Tony Negri claim that the city is a factory for the production of common goods. Do you agree?</p>
<p><strong>Harvey</strong> <strong>:</strong> A lot revolves around the definition of &#8220;urban commons.&#8221; The fact that central squares are public is significant in terms of the right to the city, as the Occupy movements in New York and London demonstrated when they took over privatized parks. In this context, I like the historical model of the Paris Commune: People who lived on the outskirts returned to the city center in order to reclaim the city they had been excluded from.</p>
<p><strong>SPIEGEL ONLINE:</strong> Should Occupy movements push for a right to the city? House by house, park by park?</p>
<p><strong>Harvey</strong> <strong>:</strong> No, for that you need political power. But these days, the left unfortunately shrinks away from large-scale projects requiring state policies &#8212; voluntarily yielding power, in my view.</p>
<p><strong>SPIEGEL ONLINE: </strong>You are a Marxist and social theorist. In your latest book, you refer to the &#8220;art of rent,&#8221; that is, when capital makes extra profits from local discrepancies. What exactly do you mean?</p>
<p><strong>Harvey</strong> <strong>:</strong> Simply put, a monopolist can demand a premium for a sought-after commodity. These days, cities try demanding premiums by advertising themselves as culturally unique. After the Guggenheim Museum was built in Bilbao in 1997, cities all over the world followed its example and began developing landmark projects. The goal is to be able to say: &#8220;This city is unique, and that&#8217;s why you need to pay a special price to be here.&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>SPIEGEL ONLINE:</strong> But if every city had a Guggenheim Museum or a philharmonic like the one currently being built in Hamburg, wouldn&#8217;t there be a sort of inflationary effect when it comes to such flagship projects that would lead them to fail?</p>
<p><strong>Harvey</strong> <strong>:</strong> The bubble has already burst in Spain, and many of the huge projects remain only half-finished. Incidentally, major events like the Olympic Games, the soccer World Cup and music festivals serve the same purpose. Cities try to secure themselves a prime position on the market &#8212; like a rare wine of an exceptionally good vintage.</p>

<p><strong>The European common currency zone has now been in recession for six straight quarters, with three of the bloc&#8217;s four largest economies now suffering persistent negative growth. Could the Continent&#8217;s pursuit of austerity be backfiring? German commentators believe the answer is yes.</strong></p>
<p>Japan can finally breathe a sigh of relief. After more than a decade of economic stagnation, the country&#8217;s economy is growing again, fuelled by the <a title="massive stimulus measures" href="http://www.spiegel.de/international/business/risky-economic-plan-for-japan-inspires-hope-and-fear-a-894625.html">massive stimulus measures</a> taken by new Prime <a href="http://www.spiegel.de/international/europe/german-press-says-extended-eu-recession-shows-austerity-ineffective-a-900252.html">Minister</a> Shinzo Abe.</p>
<p>But the Japanese curse has not been eradicated. Many economists say it has merely moved. To Europe. And economic data released on Wednesday will have done little to counter that conviction.</p>
<p>The European Union statistics office on Wednesday noted that nine of 17 euro-zone member states are now in recession, with France being the newest significant member of that club. Furthermore, the common currency zone, with bloc-wide declines in economic output for six straight quarters, is now struggling through its longest recession ever, worse even than the downturn in the immediate wake of the 2008 financial crisis.</p>
<p>The contraction was not huge; the euro-zone economy shrank by just 0.2 percent in the first three months of this year. And the German economy narrowly avoided recession, posting growth of 0.1 percent. But the situation in large economies such as Italy <a title="and Spain" href="http://www.spiegel.de/international/europe/bavarian-companies-set-sights-on-workers-from-spain-to-fill-jobs-a-900034.html">and Spain</a>, both of which saw contractions of 0.5 percent in the first quarter of this year, is worrisome.</p>
<p>The currency area&#8217;s persistent stagnation has raised concerns that Europe could be facing a &#8220;<a title="lost decade" href="http://www.spiegel.de/international/europe/new-pew-study-finds-europeans-losing-faith-in-eu-project-a-899588.html">lost decade</a>&#8221; like the one Japan recently lived through. Klaas Knot, head of the Dutch central bank and member of the European Central Bank board, is just one of many significant voices sounding the warning.</p>
<p><strong>Strategy May Not Be Working</strong></p>
<p>Tellingly, Japan&#8217;s recent up-tick in growth has come as a result of Abe&#8217;s injection of €90 billion ($116 billion) into the economy despite the country&#8217;s huge sovereign debt burden of over 200 percent of gross domestic product. Europe, meanwhile, remains focused on austerity and structural changes as its preferred strategy in <a href="http://www.spiegel.de/international/europe/german-press-says-extended-eu-recession-shows-austerity-ineffective-a-900252.html">dealing with</a> persistent challenges facing the euro and high debt in many euro-zone member states.</p>
<p>France&#8217;s new membership in the recession club is just the latest indication that the current strategy may not be working. Indeed, it seems likely that pleas by French President François Hollande, under extreme pressure for his not altogether adept handling of the economy, for greater economic stimulus will only grow louder. The European Central Bank likewise hinted recently that it was willing to loosen monetary policy further, cutting the euro-zone <a href="http://www.spiegel.de/international/europe/german-press-says-extended-eu-recession-shows-austerity-ineffective-a-900252.html">interest rate</a> by a quarter point at the beginning of this month.</p>
<p>At the same time, however, ECB head Mario Draghi urged that countries not &#8220;unravel&#8221; their progress on reducing deficits and debt. European Commission President Manuel Barroso likewise demonstrated on Wednesday that the focus remains on restructuring rather than stimulus. He demanded that Paris present a &#8220;credible reform program so that France can regain its competitiveness.&#8221; He added: &#8220;The truth is that France has lost competitiveness over the past 20 years.&#8221; Germany, too, has shown <a title="no interest in backing away from austerity" href="http://www.spiegel.de/international/europe/german-government-report-says-euro-nations-must-speed-up-reform-a-899548.html">no interest in backing away from austerity</a>.</p>
<p>German dailies take a closer look at the economic miasma that has befallen the euro zone as well as at the most recent critical case across the border in France.</p>
<p>Business daily <strong>Handelsblatt</strong> writes:</p>
<p>&#8220;We Europeans are gazing longingly across the Big Pond and wondering why we have not been granted (the same positive economic news as the US). And the answer suggests itself: Because we may very well have gone too far with austerity.&#8221;</p>
<p>&#8220;The comparison between the US and the EU is currently a comparison of two economic doctrines that could hardly be any different. The Old Continent has chosen a brutal strategy which, on the drawing table, works like this: You cut your way to health, reduce the salaries of those employees you don&#8217;t fire. That increases competitiveness and you can then grow again, faster and more balanced than before. That one slides into a recession at the beginning is part of the plan. But the fact that it is lasting so horrifically long leads one to suspect that Europe&#8217;s path is making the Continent sicker rather than healthier.&#8221;</p>
<p>&#8220;European leaders should attempt to protect the economy by slowing the state&#8217;s retreat. A long-term, ambitious plan for cutting spending remains necessary. But it should be shallower and should be connected to the cyclically adjusted deficit. The fact that economically liberal institutions like the International Monetary Fund and the Office of Economic Cooperation and Development are of the same opinion should not scare us off.&#8221;</p>
<p>Center-right daily <strong>Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung</strong> focuses on France:</p>
<p>Barroso&#8217;s observation about French competitiveness &#8220;is essentially a demand that Hollande, against the wishes of his left-wing critics, launch a courageous reform program to boost the economy. That would be necessary and desirable, and not just for France.&#8221;</p>
<p>&#8220;Because if the French lose their courage, if their economy is left behind and if their political leadership remains weak and indecisive, then that is bad for Europe. Paris is fond of complaining about austerity and its allegedly harmful effects on growth. But where are the ideas or the visions for how the EU can exist in our highly competitive world? There are none. The French disillusionment is also bad for Germany, which threatens to lose its primary partner. &#8230; At the beginning of his second year in office, President Hollande has to admit that things cannot continue as they are. Germany cannot do everything on its own. And even a strong chancellor needs a strong partner.&#8221;</p>
<p>The left-leaning daily <strong>Die Tageszeitung</strong> writes:</p>
<p>&#8220;Driven by their fetish of &#8216;competitiveness,&#8217; a part of the European Commission and German Chancellor Angela Merkel … are trying to better position Europe globally by way of reducing hard-fought employee rights and social standards in all countries. Cuts in unemployment benefits, reductions in worker protections, lower pensions, expansions to limited work contractions … and weakening the unions: Those are just some of the ideas that are on the table. European Union countries are to pledge to reform their social and labor systems so that they conform to the market.&#8221;</p>
<p>&#8220;What should be done to counter such plans? &#8230; So far, alternative models for how to stimulate Europe&#8217;s economy and fairly tax wealth exist only on paper and must be finalized. When it comes to linking European protest movements and coordinating salary demands &#8230; the unions are hopelessly behind. And European, and particularly German, Social Democrats (and the Greens in Germany) have not emerged as credible opponents to austerity. On the contrary.&#8221;</p>
<p>&#8220;But if the neo-liberal and post-democratic restructuring of Europe is to be stopped, only frontal opposition will prove effective. The existence of Europe is at stake.&#8221;</p>

<p><strong>Forget Big Brother. Companies and countries are discovering that algorithms programmed to scour vast quantities of data can be much more powerful. They can predict your next purchase, forecast car thefts and maybe even help cure cancer. But there is a down side.</strong></p>
<p>On balmy spring evenings, Hamburg&#8217;s Köhlbrand Bridge offers an idyllic postcard view of the city&#8217;s harbor. The Elbe River shimmers in the reddish glow of sunset, forklifts, cranes and trucks seem to move in slow motion, and occasionally a container ship glides by. But from the standpoint of Sebastian Saxe, the area is primarily an equation with many variables. For the past four-and-a-half years, the 57-year-old mathematician has been working on his trickiest computing task yet at the behest of the company that manages the Hamburg port.</p>
<p>The port covers an area of 7,200 hectares (about 28 square miles). Roughly 200 trains a day traverse its 300-kilometer (186-mile) network of rails and its 130 bridges to transport goods that have arrived by ship. Saxe, as <a href="http://www.spiegel.de/international/business/big-data-enables-companies-and-researchers-to-look-into-the-future-a-899964.html">chief information officer</a> of the Hamburg Port Authority (HPA), faces the enormous task of optimizing this logistical nightmare.</p>
<p>The amount of land is finite, and further expansion is not possible. Nevertheless, the Hamburg Senate has announced its goal of almost tripling container transshipment volumes in the city by 2025. This will only work if Saxe and his 60-member IT team manage to optimally exploit another resource: data. He certainly has plenty of it.</p>
<p>The port is already filled with sensors today. Trucks and freight trains are constantly transmitting their positions while incoming container ships report their location and speed. Sensors that constantly monitor port traffic are built into the Köhlbrand Bridge.</p>
<p>&#8220;Our goal is a totally interconnected, intelligent port, a Smart-port,&#8221; says Saxe. He envisions a port in which, for example, a railroad drawbridge would no longer open at specific times, but rather just before a ship actually reaches it. This eliminates unnecessary delays for the railroad and at the terminal. Even the Köhlbrand Bridge would become &#8220;intelligent,&#8221; in that it would report its current condition and predict future maintenance needs, all through the use of sensors. The frequency of scheduled maintenance dates was recently increased because significantly larger numbers of heavy trucks were crossing the bridge than had been planned for. This was of interest to Saxe and the HPA, but also to police and the customs agency, because some of the trucks were carrying illegal loads.</p>
<p><strong>Rediscovering Data</strong></p>
<p>In the end, the complex harbor logistics will create a machine that controls itself. Saxe&#8217;s vision of the future is a sort of port exchange, allowing <a href="http://www.spiegel.de/international/business/big-data-enables-companies-and-researchers-to-look-into-the-future-a-899964.html">shipping companies</a> to predict, down to the minute, how quickly their containers will be moved from the water to the road.</p>
<p>Many other companies worldwide are in the same position as the HPA. They are rediscovering a raw material that they, their facilities and their customers produce in excess every day: data.</p>
<p>The expression &#8220;Big Brother&#8221; has become dated. Experts would seem to have reached consensus on the term &#8220;Big Data&#8221; to describe the new favorite topic of discussion in boardrooms, at conventions like Berlin&#8217;s re:publica last week, and in a number of new books. Big Data promises both total control and the logical <a href="http://www.spiegel.de/international/business/big-data-enables-companies-and-researchers-to-look-into-the-future-a-899964.html">management of</a> our future in all aspects of life. Authors like Oxford Professor Victor Mayer-Schönberger are calling it a &#8220;revolution.&#8221; According to Mayer-Schönberger, Big Data, which is also the title of his current book on the subject, will change our working environment and even the way we think.</p>
<p>The most important factor is not the sheer volume of data, even though it is currently growing faster than ever. An estimated 2.8 zettabytes of data were created in 2012. One zettabyte is 1,000,000,000,000,000,000 kilobytes. Experts predict that the volume of new data could increase to 40 zettabytes by 2020. It would take about 250 million DVDs to store the amount of data being transmitted on the Internet in a single day. This volume doubles about once every two years.</p>
<p>New is the way companies, government agencies and scientists are now beginning to interpret and analyze their data resources. Because storage space costs almost nothing nowadays, computers, which are getting faster and faster, can link and correlate a wide variety of data around the clock. Algorithms are what create order from this chaos. They dig through, discovering previously unknown patterns and promptly revealing new relationships, insights and business models.</p>
<p>Though the term Big Data means very little to most people, the power of algorithms is already everywhere. Credit card companies can quickly recognize unusual usage patterns, and hence automatically warn cardholders when large sums are suddenly being charged to their cards in places where they have never been. Energy companies use weather data analyses to pinpoint the ideal locations for wind turbines down to the last meter. According to official figures, since the Swedish capital Stockholm began using algorithms to manage traffic, drive times through the city&#8217;s downtown area have been cut in half and emissions reduced by 10 percent. Online merchants have recently started using the analyses to optimize their selling strategies. The widespread phrase &#8220;Customers who bought this item also bought …&#8221; is only one example of the approach.</p>
<p><strong>Turning Data into Dollars</strong></p>
<p>Google and Facebook are pure, unadulterated Big Data. Their business models are based on collecting, analyzing and marketing information about their users, through advertising tailored as closely as possible to the individual. This gigantic database and the notion of what can be done with more than a billion individual profiles in the age of Big Data was worth at least $100 billion (€78 billion) to Facebook investors.</p>
<p>The prospect of turning their treasure troves of data into dollars is now fueling the fantasies of businesses in many industries, from supermarkets to the automobile industry, and from aviation to banks and insurance companies. According to figures published by industry association Bitkom, global sales related to Big Data applications amounted to €4.6 billion in 2012. That number is expected to increase to about €16 billion by 2016.</p>
<p>Countless Big Data applications are also being tested in medicine and science. Even the public sector, especially police departments and security agencies, not always the most progressive when it comes to IT, have recognized the potential benefits in their fields.</p>
<p>What captivates so many people is the promise of gazing into the future, thanks to the lightning speed at which massive amounts of data can be analyzed. In fact, algorithms allow for astonishingly precise predictions of human behavior, be it in front of supermarket shelves, in traffic or when it comes to credit-card payment patterns.</p>
<p>In 2010, Google predicted a wave of flu outbreaks on the basis of user searches. American data specialist Nate Silver predicted the outcome of the last US presidential election well in advance and more precisely than all demographers.</p>
<p><strong>&#8216;The End of Chance&#8217;</strong></p>
<p>Some cities even predict the probability of crimes in certain neighborhoods. The method, known as &#8220;predictive policing,&#8221; seems like something straight out of a Hollywood film, and in fact it is. In Steven Spielberg&#8217;s &#8220;Minority Report,&#8221; perpetrators were arrested for crimes they hadn&#8217;t even committed yet.</p>
<p>Finding the presumed delinquents also doesn&#8217;t seem to present a problem. Scientists have figured out that, with the help of our mobile phone geolocation and address book data, they can predict with some certainty where we will be tomorrow or at a certain time a year from now.</p>
<p>The increasing accuracy of such forecasts have led American tech guru Chris Anderson to proclaim that we are arriving at the &#8220;end of theory.&#8221; Austrian media executive Rudi Klausnitzer, who has just written a book on the subject called &#8220;Das Ende des Zufalls&#8221; (&#8220;The End of Chance&#8221;), has reached a similar conclusion.</p>
<p>It is a prospect that is not altogether appealing to some. But many already rely on the prognostic ability of soulless algorithms in the most intimate spheres of life. The extensive questionnaires used by online dating agencies are fed into algorithms designed to increase the probability of finding a compatible partner.</p>
<p>A gold rush of sorts is taking shape in companies, research laboratories and some government agencies. In many places, the mantra of data is extolled as the new &#8220;oil&#8221; or &#8220;gold&#8221; of the 21st century. Some people are already benefiting financially: statisticians, physicists and so-called data scientists or data miners, who advise companies on Big Data applications. As with the classic American gold rush in the 19th century, most of the money is being made by those who sell equipment, tools and expertise, Big Data specialists like Blue Yonder, a company with 85 employees.</p>

<p>The Land that God Forgot</p>
<p>The Devil was given permission one day</p>
<p>To select him a land for his own special sway;</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>So he hunted around for a month or more</p>
<p>Ad fussed and fumed and terribly swore,</p>
<p>But at last was delighted a country to view</p>
<p>where the prickly pears and mesquite grew.</p>
<p>With a survey brief, without further excuse,</p>
<p>He took his stand on the banks of the Santa<strong></strong></p>
<p>Cruz</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>He saw there was some improvement <strong>to make</strong><strong>,</strong></p>
<p>For he felt his own reputation was <strong>at </strong>stake.</p>
<p>And an idea struck him-he swore by his horns,</p>
<p><strong>to </strong>make a complete vegetation <strong>of </strong>thorns.</p>
<p>He studded the land with the prickly pears</p>
<p>And scattered the cactus everywhere.</p>
<p>The Spanish dagger, sharp pointed and tall,</p>
<p>And last the cholla the worst <strong>of </strong>all.</p>

<p>He imported Apaches direct from Hell,</p>

Before the real estate crash I was a land specialist in Arizona with millions of dollars of transactions, but then I had to change and also sell other commercial investment properties, which was fun, but I am a Commercial Landspecialist in Arizonal, a Commercial Land Specialist in Phoenix and love to sell land, one acre to thousands of acres.</em></p>
<p><em>Since I was a Land Specialist in Arizona and a Land Speciaost in Phoenix many of my clients, Sellers and Buyers remember me and now they are calling me again, so this is the time to get back into land and none of my clients, including future clients, will miss out on getting their best deal.</em></p>
