Yelp has named Phoenix one of the best cities for shopping local.
Phoenix was ranked no. 15 in Yelp’s “Top 20 Cities to Shop Local in 2016.” The San Francisco-based company created a gifting score for each city by looking at reviews mentioning the word “gift” written by locals for non-chain businesses in specific shopping categories that are popular for the holidays.
Phoenix’s place on Yelp’s ranking could be thanks in part to the efforts of Local First Arizona, the largest local business coalition in the country.
“Arizonans should recognize that where they spend their money has a much greater impact on their community and well being than they might expect,” said Kimber Lanning, founder and director of Local First Arizona, in a statement. “Up to four times more money stays in the local economy when those dollars are spent with a local businesses rather than a national chain or global online retailer.”
LFAZ is kicking off its “Buy Local Month” on Nov. 25 until Jan. 1.
According to a recent survey conducted by Yelp and Harris Poll found that 64 percent of American adults will shop local this holiday season. Each of those local shoppers plans to spend an average of $324 — a 26 percent increase from last year— meaning nearly $49 billion will be spent with independent retailers during the holiday season.
Americans are expected to spend more than $650 billion on gifts, food, celebrations, and other holiday needs, according to the National Retail Federation.
