After being part of Arizona’s burgeoning software community for the past 20 years, Greg Head wants to tell the world all about it.

“The big story here is 10 years ago it was just a handful of software companies,” Head said in an exclusive interview. “Now we’re headed towards 200 software companies.”

After leaving Chandler-based Infusionsoft as its chief marketing officer for five years, Head spent three months sitting down with nearly 100 local software founders to offer advice and help out. He started his own list of local software companies since no one else had one.

And then an interesting thing happened: lots of people started asking for it, including investors, job seekers and others looking to network and meet like-minded people.

So Head, who also co-founded Scottsdale-based SalesLogix Corp., decided to post the list on his website, calling it “Gregslist of Arizona Software Companies.”

“It’s very active and everybody can see it,” said Head, who now works as a growth advisor to CEOs of software companies and small businesses. “Most say, ‘Holy cow, I had no idea what was going on.’ There’s actually a boom going on in the early stage of the Phoenix software ecosystem. We’re moving software to the next level.”

The list of more than 150 companies went online Aug. 22, and has since received close to 400 Linkedin shares and Facebook likes. More than 2,000 people have seen the website since, and many people have emailed him from out of state wanting to learn more. He’s also received over 50 thank you emails and notes for putting the list together.

“It’s been spreading like wildfire,” said Head, who also worked with tech companies Lumension and Flypaper Studio. “This reveals what is going on in Arizona software.”

Head vows to keep it up to date and will add new software companies weekly as he finds out about them. In the last week, Head and an ASU entrepreneur intern working with him have added 25 companies to the list. Each company information is verified, and includes websites, funding and other public information for a profile.

“It’s for the software community themselves,” Head said. “It’s for the people who want to invest, job seekers and service providers who want accurate information.”

The list of 154 companies and growing has software companies with operations in Arizona, including companies offering a software as a service, platforms and apps. From Adora, a Phoenix mobile advertising company that supports charities, to Zocdoc, a doctor finding and communications app with a Scottsdale office, the list features a wide range of software companies.

“Most of the companies are based here, although some have remote offices,” Head said.

Here are some stats Head discovered from his list of Arizona software companies:

  • 18,000 direct jobs in the Arizona software industry
  • 76 percent of companies have fewer than 50 employees
  • 75 percent of funding has gone to bigger companies, which shows as companies get bigger, they get the funding
  • 52 percent of companies are self funded. “There’s not a lot of VC funding in Arizona,” Head said. “The angel investing community is growing. Most companies are self sufficient and bootstrapping. They’re resourceful and making it happen.”
  • 7 percent have a female CEO
  • Of the ones not public Head found $500 million in direct funding
  • Scottsdale has 45 percent of the software companies
  • Phoenix has 36 percent of software companies
  • The East Valley – Tempe, Gilbert and Chandler – has 12 percent of the software companies.

Software companies not on the list should contact Head through the site to be added.

The list is not sponsored by anyone. It’s Head’s independent project.

Phoenix Commercial Real Estate and Investment Real Estate: investors and Owner / Users need to really know the market today before making a move in Commercial Properties or Investment Properties in Phoenix / Tucson / Arizona, as the market has a lot of moving parts today.
