Arizona sees historic decline in unemployment rate, but not because of big job gains

Where there is no vision, there is no hope.

Arizona saw the steepest decline in its unemployment rate in April in more than 31 years. And, the jobless rate is below 7 percent for the first time since August 2008.

In Phoenix, the jobless rate was all the way down to 5.3 percent in April, compared with 6.4 percent in March.

But some of the declines are due to changes in the total workforce and number of jobless workers counted in official unemployment tallies — not because of robust job gains.

In March, there were 3.05 million workers statewide and 222,800 were counted as unemployed. In April, the labor force count was down to 3.01 million and 187,600 jobless workers. That translates into decreases of 35,500 and 35,200, respectively.

But state’s economy added a pedestrian 4,300 jobs in April — down from an average of 7,600 jobs gained during the month in recent years.

Some of the statistical changes were because of adjustments to population numbers, and others because long-term unemployed persons cannot find work and are no longer receiving jobless benefits or looking for work.

The state’s seasonally adjusted jobless rate came in at 6.9 percent in April, according to the Arizona Department of Administration. That is down from 7.3 percent in March and the largest monthly decline since Sept. 1983.

Without seasonal adjustments, Arizona’s unemployment rate was even lower in April at 6.2 percent — down from 7.3 percent in March.

Phoenix also saw decreases in its official counts of workers and the unemployed.

In April, the Phoenix metro area had 2.05 million workers and 109,200 unemployed. That is down 25,200 and 23,800, respectively, from the labor and jobless counts in March, according to DOA.
