The answer to both is yes, and we are actually working on creating & displaying that technology on COMMERCIALConnected right now. But then what? What’s next?
Yesterday I was at @1871 and spoke with seasoned CRE professionals about what the CRE world will look like in the next 10 years. Two things are clear: First, it’s shocking how many obvious and simple solutions have not been created for the CRE industry. Second, now that technology and the CRE industry have converged, and given the rate of technology development, it’s almost impossible to forecast what the industry will look like a full 10 years out.
On the first point – the CRE technology industry is the wild-wild west for innovation. For those with a CRE tech idea, who think the field is crowded already, don’t be alarmed. Get going now! I don’t think the real race begins for another year or two. Loopnet & Costar have been the only game in town for too long. They have failed to innovate and now there is a surging tidal wave of new technology being taken on-line for the first time. It will still take most of these platforms a few years to tweak their technology and gain market acceptance, but when they do the mighty evil empire will fall and technology & innovation will begin to really take over the industry.
On the second point – it’s hard to tell what the industry will look like in a few years, but I know it won’t look much like it does today. Technology moves faster and faster everyday and the innovation cycle becomes shorter and shorter. I received my broker’s license about 10 years ago, and it would still be another 2 years before the smart phone was commonplace. Today we can show virtual tours on our smart phones from anywhere in the world. The next 10 years will be even faster with technology being adapted 4 times as fast. That means the last ten years of innovation will be coming at you every 30 months. Are you ready for that? You better be, because your competitors are, and the next generation of CRE pro’s are adapting right now.
