If you think you can or you think you can’t, either way you are right.
In my last post, The Results Are In, I painted a pretty dismal picture of the current design and construction industry. To build on the item regarding availability of qualified personnel, I would like to present the following excerpts from Daniel Pink’s book Drive:
“In 2006, baby-boomers started turning sixty. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the United States alone has about 78 million baby-boomers, which means on average, each year more than four million Americans reach the age of sixty. (11,000 per day and 450 each hour) That means that every thirteen minutes another one hundred members of the wealthiest and best educated generation the world has ever known has reached the arbitrary “retirement” age. This will continue until 2024.”
The obvious conclusion is that there is a very large number of people reaching the end of their professional careers. Additionally:
“Young adults, who recently began entering the workforce, are also shifting the center of gravity in organizations by their very presence in, ‘redefining success and willing to accept a radically remixed set of rewards.’ When asked, they indicate a range of non-monetary factors, ‘a great team’ or ‘the ability to give back to society through work.’ And if they cannot find a satisfying set of rewards in existing organizations, they will venture out on their own.
Over the last three decades, worldwide membership in co-ops and non-profit organizations has doubled to 800 million people. In the U.S. alone, more people belong to a co-op or non-profit organization than own shares in the stock market.”
“Very soon the planet will contain more people over the age of sixty than under the age of five for the first time in our existence. The consequences of this cultural shift could rejuvenate businesses and remake the world.”
All of this information points to one common factor…people. There simply are not enough qualified and/or motivated people to maintain “business as usual.” Therefore, it has become imperative that we recognize how people are being treated, understand the resultant behaviors, and provide a sense of purpose at work in order to survive.
The tsunami is here and those that do not adapt quickly will become irrelevant. Are you panicked yet? Do you have a plan in place to address this condition moving forward? How confident are you in your plan?
