Education is the key to unlock the golden door of freedom.

“Sorry, boss, I can’t come in because, well, you see, I wound up at the airport and somehow boarded a plane.”
Apparently, this excuse for calling off from work is more common than you might think. According to CareerBuilder, at least.
The career and job board site released its annual list of the most outlandish excuses for calling in sick. Accidentally getting onto a plane made the list.
While nearly half – 49 percent – of employees surveyed say they have a paid time off program that allows them to use their time however they choose, nearly a quarter – 23 percent – feel obligated to make up an excuse.
Sure, there are the boring reasons for taking a day off: doctor’s appointments (21 percent of respondents), bad weather (11 percent) and being tired (19 percent), but some employees either have had some truly extraordinary circumstances crop up or simply have some absurd imaginations.
For those workers who call in sick claiming to be, well, sick, social media filters tend to flush out the fibbers. One in four employers have caught an employee lying about being sick through social media accounts. Of those, 22 percent actually fired the worker, but 54 percent only reprimanded the employee.
Along with accidentally hopping a plane, other gems of excuses shared with CareerBuilder include:
- Employee just put a casserole in the oven.
- Employee’s plastic surgery for enhancement purposes needed some “tweaking” to get it just right.
- Employee was sitting in the bathroom and her feet and legs fell asleep. When she stood, up she fell and broke her ankle.
- Employee had been at the casino all weekend and still had money left to play with on Monday morning.
- Employee woke up in a good mood and didn’t want to ruin it.
- Employee had a “lucky night” and didn’t know where he was.
- Employee got stuck in the blood pressure machine at the grocery store and couldn’t get out.
- Employee had a gallstone they wanted to heal holistically.
- Employee caught their uniform on fire by putting it in the microwave to dry.
