Super Bowl XLIX generated $719 million in total economic impact for greater Phoenix, according to new numbers released Tuesday from Arizona State University’s W.P. Carey School of Business.

The numbers include direct spending by football fans, media and tourists in town to watch the New England Patriots and Seattle Seahawks, as well as less direct “ripple effect” benefits.

Direct spending for Super Bowl XLIX totaled $295 million, according to the ASU economists.

The expanded $719 million figure is the most of any special event ever held in Arizona and more than the $501 million generated by Super Bowl XLII in 2008. It is also more than original $600 million economic impact expected by the Arizona Super Bowl Host Committee.

Some economists, such as Robert Baade with Lake Forest College in Illinois, peg Super Bowl benefits for host cities at between $30 million and $90 million, not the bigger numbers touted by theNational Football League and host city groups.

Super Bowls XLIX and XLII were played at University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, but most of the Super Bowl week events this year were held in downtown Phoenix.

More than 1 million people visited downtown Phoenix and 500,000 visited Scottsdale during the week of Super Bowl XLIX, according to the ASU study.

Super Bowl XLIX produced record days for both Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport and the Metro light rail system.

Sky Harbor served 175,000 passengers the day after the Patriots’ narrow win over the Seahawks — a single-day record.

Light rail hosted 126,000 riders the day before Super Bowl Sunday and 389,500 during Super Bowl week. Both are records
