By Brandon Brown  – Reporter, Phoenix Business Journal / l July 23, 2018

Even with fewer games and a dip in total attendance, the 2018 Cactus League was a huge win for the metro Phoenix area.

The 2018 Cactus League spring training for Major League Baseball generated $644.2 million in economic impact, according to a study released Monday by the L. William Seidman Research Institute at Arizona State University’s W.P. Carey School of Business.

That dollar amount is up more than 18 percent from 2015, the previous year the economic impact was calculated. In 2015, spring training generated $544.3 million in total output. Adjusted for inflation, that figure is $578.5 million in 2018 dollars.

“These figures tell the story of spring training’s awesome power as a tourism engine – and we need to ensure that the industry continues to remain robust,” Cactus League President Jeff Meyer said in a statement.

Fifteen MLB teams base their spring training operations at 10 Phoenix-area ballparks. That includes big-name clubs such as the Chicago Cubs in Mesa, the Los Angeles Dodgers in Glendale and the San Francisco Giants, Colorado Rockies and Arizona Diamondbacks in Scottsdale.

The study found the Cactus League created 6,439 annual jobs this year that paid a total of $224.6 million. This year’s spring training directly generated a total of $31.9 million in taxes for the state and local governments.

In this year’s study, researchers examined how spending from out-of-state spring training fans impacted the state’s gross domestic product, the primary indicator of the area’s economic health. The 2018 Cactus League season generated $373 million for Arizona’s GDP. The 2015 report did not make the same measurement.

“We have studied the economic impact of major sporting events in Arizona like the Super Bowl and the Final Four, and while they create massive economic impact, they occur here intermittently,” Anthony Evans, of the L. William Seidman Research Institute, said in a statement. “The Cactus League brings in impact of this magnitude every year. It is phenomenal – and it happens every spring in this state.”

Out-of-state Cactus League visitors had a median daily spending of $405, up from the $393 median daily spending visitors reported in 2015.

Total attendance for the 2018 Cactus League was 1.77 million, which was down from the 1.91 million record in 2017. There was a shorter season in 2018 with 24 fewer games. But at the same time, seven of the 15 teams saw average attendance drop from 2017 to 2018.
