More people flew in and out of Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport during the month of March than any other time in its history.
The airport saw nearly 4.4 million passengers during the month of March, which is 2.3 percent higher than March 2017, according to data released Friday by the city of Phoenix’s Aviation Department. On a normal day, Sky Harbor sees an average of 120,000 people but in March the average was 140,000.
March is always the busiest month of the year for Sky Harbor. Cactus League baseball, spring break, NASCAR and other Phoenix area events always bring a lot of people to the Valley that time of year.
This year there were also more flights added to Sky Harbor, which increased the number of people going through the airport. New routes include Amarillo, Cincinnati, Oklahoma City, Aspen and Jackson Hole. Plus in February Air Canada Rouge added nonstop service to Montreal and British Airways added another flight on Tuesdays and Fridays between Phoenix and London in March.
Sky Harbor’s two largest carriers increased its number of passengers in March. American Airlines served 1.97 passengers, up 2.9 percent from March 2017 and Southwest Airlines saw a 3.1 percent increase to 1.44 million passengers.
This comes as the airport is in the process of a three-phase, $590 million modernization effort of Terminal 3. The second phase is expected to be finished this fall.
The airport also saw an increase in cargo during the month of March with nearly 34,000 tons of cargo went through Sky Harbor. That is an increase of 8.1 percent from March 2017.
