In an extremely tight job market that’s pushing up salaries, businesses in the Valley’s financial services sector are finding new ways to lure in recruits.

For those looking to hire in the financial services industry, bringing in new blood can be like a marketing campaign.
That’s because there are more jobs than there are candidates, according to Kerri Francisco, vice president of The Finders, a Phoenix recruiting firm that helps tech, finance and HR leaders find fresh talent.
“You have to tap individuals on the shoulder that aren’t out there actively
looking in the job market, and try to entice them to have some conversations with you and exploratory dialogue around whether or not this opportunity would be something for them to consider,” Francisco said.
Phoenix banks are in a unique position compared with the rest of the country. According to data from Menlo Park, California-based human resources consulting and staffing firm Robert Half International, salaries in 2020 for banking and accounting positions in Phoenix are expected to be 17% higher than the national average. As the Valley’s financial services firms grapple with a low unemployment rate, seasoned professionals looking to change jobs have a buffet of choices.
Now, corporate culture is becoming a key differentiator banks are using to set themselves apart while looking to land top-notch candidates.
For example, while a chief financial officer at a financial services company in the 25th percentile — the point at which the lowest 25% of workers would fall — has a national average salary of $121,500, in Phoenix, the salary for a CFO of that level averages $142,155. It’s the same for lower-level jobs. On the national level, an accounting clerk in the 25th percentile has an average salary of $29,000; in Phoenix, the salary averages $33,930.
These salaries make Phoenix a candidate-friendly market, according to Travis Laird, a regional vice president with Robert Half.
“If you look at salary trends for Phoenix compared to the national average, that speaks a lot to the low unemployment rate,” Laird said. “As unemployment continues to go down, competition to hire qualified candidates goes up, which only contributes to salary increases we’re seeing in Phoenix.”
Only two years ago, Phoenix was trending 8% to 10% above the national average in terms of total compensation being offered, Laird said. Salaries for financial professionals now have jumped — along with the amount of positions that need to be filled.
“It’s not uncommon for a job candidate we’re working with to receive four quality offers from employers across the level,” Laird said.
That’s why it’s important for recruiters not to think they’ve hooked a candidate just because they sent out a job offer. Instead, they have to make themselves stand out from competitors to attract new hires, especially those with experience.
One good way to stand out is to stay visible, said Trent Akres, a recruiting manager for Wells Fargo & Co.’s Desert Mountain region.
“Our recruiting teams are always out in the public of the communities we serve,” he said. “We go out to local career fairs, make sure we’re developing partnerships, and we make sure people know we’re hiring and for what kinds of jobs.”
In such a tight market, Akres also said it’s essential for banks to carve out niche businesses. Wells Fargo has developed initiatives focused on hiring veterans, for example, and recruiting veterans who have gone back to college after completing their service.
