“When your friends begin to flatter you on how young you look, it’s a sure sign you’re getting old.” Mark Twain

Whether it’s promoting exercise, encouraging healthy eating or spearheading office wellness programs, the Greater Phoenix area is home to some of the healthiest work places in the state.
Sixty-eight of those companies were honored this morning by the Phoenix Business Journal as part of its annual Healthiest Employers program. The program recognizes businesses across all industries for their efforts to keep their workers healthy and productive.
In the small-company category, businesses with two to 250 employees, MeritageHomes Corp. ranked No. 3 on the list.
Meritage introduced its wellness program in 2008, which has helped their employees become healthier, more informed and receive financial incentives to encourage and promote their ongoing healthy habits for themselves and their families.
No. 2 on the small-company list was the Mahoney Group, which removed all office vending machines and replaced them with complimentary fresh produce, bottled water, whey protein isolate powder and free Omega 3s year-round.
At the top of the list was McCarthy Building Cos. McCarthy’s “Build for Life” program focuses on four key areas: awareness, prevention, activity and lifestyle and stress. As part of it’s annual Activity Challenge last year, 42 employees lost weight, 61 lowered their blood pressure, 125 started exercising and three employees quit smoking.
On the mid-sized healthiest employers list — those with 251 to 1,499 employees — the third-ranked company was American Traffic Solutions. ATS launched a “Biggest Loser” challenge that supported more than 138 employees.
Able Engineering and Component Services came in at No. 2 on the mid-sized company list. Able employees are approaching 3,000 pounds of weight loss in three years. Making its way to the top of the 2014 list was SmartPractice, which provides an onsite wellness clinic staffed by a doctor and a nurse to visit during the work day for acute, preventive and chronic care visits.
In the large-sized company category, businesses with 1,500 employees or more, UnitedHealthcare Southwest was No. 3 on the list. UnitedHealthcare’s internal wellness program, “Your Rewards for Health,” encourages a healthier lifestyle among workers by giving them the chance to earn credits that may lower their annual medical premium by working with an online health assessment or a wellness coach.
American Express Co. ranked No. 2 on the list, primarily because of its healthy-living program, which is geared toward improving health, productivity and performance while controlling long-term health costs.
Sitting on top of the large-company list was Cigna. Officials said their employees have access to onsite health care and can participate in various programs and wellness services, including coaching programs for weight loss, stress management and tobacco cessation, plus personal health coaching on topics such as nutrition and physical fitness.
Each of the winning companies had to apply for consideration, with a self-assessment submitted to our research partners at Healthiest Employers LLC, a privately held data research company that focuses on corporate wellness. The company then ranked the companies based on the employer indexes generated by the proprietary formula. The companies were ranked in three categories by their number of employees.
“We had an exceptional response from the community for the fourth year of our program,” said Publisher Don Henninger.
This year’s event drew more than 300 to the downtown Phoenix Sheraton. Premier sponsors were Cigna and CopperPoint Mutual. Valley of the Sun YMCA and Delta Dental also were sponsors.

WAITING TO SELL YOUR LAND ? TIMES CHANGE / IT’S TIME
We barely could give land away the last few years, but times are changing. Even in those meager years, I sold more land across the state than most other brokers. Before the real estate crash I was a land specialist in Arizona with millions of dollars of transactions, but then I had to change and also sell other commercial investment properties, which was fun, but I am a Commercial Landspecialist in Arizonal, a Commercial Land Specialist in Phoenix and love to sell land, one acre to thousands of acres.
If you have any questions about Commercial Investment Properties in Phoenix or Commercial Investment Properties in Arizona, I will gladly sit down with you and share my expertise and my professional opinion in Commercial Properties in Phoenix or Commercial Properties in Arizona with you.Obviously I am also in this to make money, but it could be a win-win situation for all of us.
