RJR Technologies Inc., an Oakland, California-based semiconductor packaging company, is moving its headquarters to the Valley and opening a second manufacturing factory in south Phoenix.
The 30-year-old company is making a $2 million capital investment on the 30,000-square-foot factory at 3602 E. La Salle St., which should be operational by the end of the year, said CEO Wil Salhuana.
“We like the talent in Phoenix, which has a good semiconductor base,” said Salhuana, who has lived in Tempe for 22 years. “There’s a reasonable cost of living here, with friendly government and a more pro-business stance. We’ve had really good dealings with Phoenix officials.”
The 130-employee RJR Tech will start with about 10 people moving to Phoenix, with plans to grow to 100 employees by the end of 2018.
The factory will manufacture components to encapsulate semiconductors, and will have engineering work with production and development. Open positions will be in engineering, sales, customer service, administration and manufacturing. Salary ranges have not been set, Salhuana said.
Phoenix Economic Development Director Christine Mackay said RJR is an “important new business” because of its advanced manufacturing offering and expected higher salaries.
“Finding advanced manufacturing jobs for Phoenix is a city council priority,” Mackay said. “The reason is that these types of companies have a higher economic multiplier than the average industry.”
RJR Tech opened a small sales and engineering office in Phoenix about three years ago. Deciding to make the big move was a two-year process, he said.
“We targeted Phoenix from the start,” said Salhuana, whose company will keep its first factory in Oakland. “We just had to be convinced it made sense for us.”
While RJR supplies its solutions to major semiconductor companies, Salhuana said he couldn’t name their customers because of non-disclosure agreements. However, he said having access to the Valley’s semiconductor players was a major plus to moving to the region.
“It’s a very strong base here. It made our decision easy,” Salhuana said. “We’re just very excited to put this new factory in Phoenix. We’re certainly proud of what we’re doing to attract industry into the Valley.”
Santa Clara, California-based Intel Corp. (Nasdaq: INTC), has about 11,000 employees in Chandler. ON Semiconductor Corp. (Nasdaq: ON) is based in Phoenix and Microchip Technology Inc. (Nasdaq: MCHP) is based in Chandler.
Greater Phoenix Economic Council President and CEO Chris Camacho said city leaders had the opportunity to meet one-on-one with RJR Tech’s team, which Salhuana stressed was a “delight” to work with.
“I know they appreciated the effort we put in and how we broke down obstacles to get them to move here,” Camacho said. “We tried to mitigate any risks as they expand to greater Phoenix.”
