COMMERCIAL GROUP / KASTEN LONG COMMERCIAL REAL ESTATE NEWS THAT MATTERS /NOVEMBER 2018.
Anne Stych, Contributing Writer Nov 7, 2018, 9:07am EST
High consumer confidence, low unemployment, and a favorable calendar could push holiday spending past the $1 trillion mark for the first time this year.
According to eMarketer, a company that tracks trends related to digital marketing, media and commerce, total retail sales in the United States will increase 5.8 percent to $1.002 trillion this holiday season.
Retail sales between Nov. 1 and Dec. 31 will get a boost from Thanksgiving coming comparatively early in the month of November, meaning there are 32 shopping days between Thanksgiving and Christmas.

More than half – 56 percent – will begin their holiday shopping before Thanksgiving, and of those, 23 percent started their shopping by August, Chain Store Age reports.
eMarketer also increased its forecast of brick-and-mortar location holiday sales from $863 billion to $878.38 billion, noting that while store traffic has steadily declined in recent years, brick-and-mortar still represents 87.7 percent of holiday sales.
A survey by payment solutions company Square found that 72 percent of Americans prefer to shop in person for purchases of more than $250.
“While e-commerce will continue to see strong double-digit gains, brick-and-mortar retail should be a particular bright spot this holiday season,” said Andrew Lipsman, principal analyst at eMarketer. “Retailers are luring in shoppers with remodeled stores, streamlined checkout and options to buy online, pick up in-store.”
The majority of consumers, 84 percent, say they prefer to support small businesses whenever they can, per Chain Store Age.
E-commerce sales are predicted to increase 16.6 percent to $123.73 billion, representing 12.3 percent of all holiday retail sales.
“For retailers, it will be a battle for e-commerce market share,” said eMarketer forecasting analyst Cindy Liu. “We should expect more promotions and perks like free and fast shipping, as retailers compete against Amazon.”
Consumers told Square (NASDAQ:SQ) that having the ability to pay for a purchase over time makes them more comfortable spending more for the holidays (61 percent), and 68 percent said they would be more likely to consider a small or local business if it offered financing options.
