We’re looking at another long, hot summer in metro Phoenix, but that’s no excuse to just stay at home soaking up the air conditioning all summer.
There are plenty of fun things to do throughout the Valley, indoors and out.
Despite living in the desert, you can tube on a river or paddleboard on a lake without leaving town. Zoos, botanical gardens and other attractions are much less crowded this time of year.
Art lovers have loads of options. When it comes to public art, there are a wide variety of outdoor installations and murals, or head inside for the peace and quiet of a museum.
And if you really want to stay cool and out of the sun, we’ve got a guide to the best summer movies in theaters and streaming.
Read on for the best things to do this summer throughout metro Phoenix. Need more ideas? Check back — we’ll be updating this list as the season progresses.

Go for a swim: Cities from Buckeye to Phoenix to Gilbert have opened their pools for the season, with swim sessions, lessons and other summer fun. Here is our comprehensive guide to public pools throughout metro Phoenix.
Surf’s up! From lazy rivers to exhilarating slides, metro Phoenix water parks are fun for the whole family. Our roundup tells you where they are and what’s offered at each park. Want to spend the day at a resort? This guide to hotel water parks has you covered. We’ve got a guide to getting hotel-pool day passes, too.
Go tubing on the river: Float the calm water of the lower Salt River this summer. Salt River Tubing offers outings of 1½ to four hours that include tube rental and shuttle service from Mesa. Keep an eye out — you might catch a glimpse of wild horses in Tonto National Forest. Here’s our guide to Salt River Tubing, including holidays and theme days when visitors are encouraged to dress up.
Family time: Kid-friendly attractions such as the Phoenix Zoo, Octane Raceway and the World Wildlife Zoo, Aquarium & Safari Park are open all year. Here is a list of 11 fun activities for kids this summer.
Take a hike: Of course you can hike in the hot weather. You just have to hydrate and take a few common-sense precautions, like getting an early start. Here are summer hiking safety tips, plus four scenic local trails to try.
Go play in a park: The Valley is full of parks — from sprawling regional ones with swimming pools and skate parks to little neighborhood gems perfect for walking your dog or pushing a stroller. We’ve rounded up five favorite Phoenix parks here. Or visit Sahuaro Ranch Park in Glendale. In addition to numerous recreation amenities, the park has a resident flock of peacocks. And Rio Vista Community Park in Peoria has a specially designed inclusive playground where kids with disabilities can join the fun.
Explore a botanical garden: Summer is a nice time to stroll one of the botanical gardens in metro Phoenix, especially if you get an early start. The Japanese Friendship Garden in downtown Phoenix is shady and has soothing water features. And summer is a good time to see cactus fruits at Desert Botanical Garden in Phoenix or Boyce Thompson Arboretum near Superior.
Grown-up summer fun
Treat yourself to something new: Whether you’re interested in the latest retailers opening throughout metro Phoenix or vintage is more your vibe, there’s no end to places to shop in air-conditioned comfort this summer. If you’re flying this summer, check out these new shops and restaurants coming to the Phoenix airport.
Resort pool parties: Summer is the time to cut loose, right? Go ahead and do that at one of the popular pool parties and day clubs in Phoenix and Scottsdale. Venues are offering DJs, live music and specialty cocktails. To elevate your experience, reserve a day bed or private cabana. Here are five of the best pool parties for summer 2022.
Explore the metro Phoenix arts scene
An artist comes full circle: Nationally renowned artist Beverly McIver is a North Carolina native, but her career took off when she lived in Arizona. See a collection of her work, “Beverly McIver: Full Circle” through Sept. 4 at the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art.
If you liked Immersive Van Gogh: More than 5 million tickets were sold in the U.S. to the Immersive Van Gogh exhibit that included a lengthy stay in Scottsdale. Next up for the Immersive treatment is “Immersive Monet & The Impressionists,” scheduled to run in Phoenix from July 29 to Sept. 18.
Phoenix native making waves in the art world: Many are familiar with Antoinette Cauley’s work because of the 10-story James Baldwin mural in downtown Phoenix. This summer check out “Blackbird Fly,” on display at GateWay Community College through mid-July. The exhibition features 14 paintings of Black girls, teens and women from Phoenix.
Chihuly in the Desert: Glass artist Dale Chihuly always loved the desert as was evident in his 2013 show celebrating Arizona’s sunrises, sunsets and saguaro cactus. His current exhibition is split between Taliesin West and the Desert Botanical Garden until June 19.
Celebrating an award-winning photographer: Two-time Pulitzer Prize-winning photojournalist Nick Oza documented the community with grace and dignity until he died on Sept. 27, 2021, as a result of injuries suffered in a car accident. A mural commemorating Oza is on display near McDowell Road and 18th Avenue in the city he came to call home.
Check out these wheels: Metro Phoenix museums and galleries aren’t taking the summer off as a number of prominent exhibitions will offer plenty of to see. Southwest car and lowrider culture will be featured at Phoenix Art Museum and the Mesa Arts Center, among other attractions.
The best in music and movies
Concerts are back: After nearly two years in which the concert industry ground to a halt due to the COVID-19 pandemic, musicians are taking to stages all over the Valley. Here are the biggest concerts coming up and a handful of our critic’s picks.
Phoenix’s Dick Clark of Country music: Ray Odom brought a young Elvis Presley to town for a show at the state fairgrounds. He helped put Phoenix on the country music map and produced the TV shows “Arizona Hayride” and “Hillbilly Hit Parade.”
She’s from “Freaking Phoenix”: Actress Haley Lu Richardson, who stars in “Montana Story,” is proud to say she grew up in the city, not a suburb. She’s also appeared in movies like “The Edge of Seventeen,” “Split,” “After Yang” and “Unpregnant,” and will appear in the new season of “The White Lotus.”
Must-see summer movies: There are certainly enough big-name sequels and prequels scheduled for this summer and there is usually a sleeper big hit to go along with what looks like a sure-fire smash that tanks. Here are our 10 picks for the summer’s must-see movies.
Treasures of the musical world: The Musical Instrument Museum in Phoenix is home to a fascinating collection of instruments from all over the world. A featured exhibition through this summer is “Treasures: Legendary Musical Instruments” which features instruments going back as far as 6,000 years.
