Construction is underway on the 265-room Caesars Republic Scottsdale, the first hotel by gaming giant Caesars Entertainment Corp. that won’t include a casino or other gaming operations.

 

HCW Development expects the project at 7025 N. Goldwater Blvd. in Scottsdale, Arizona, to open in January 2022. The company has developed more than $2 billion in real estate in the past 23 years in partnership with Las Vegas-based Caesars and shopping mall developer Macerich, which owns the site of the planned hotel.

Caesars first announced the project in January 2019 in a bet that developing hotels and other nongaming revenue will help boost profits as Americans spend more time shopping and staying in hotels than gambling. Other casino companies, including MGM Resorts International, have launched concerts and other nongaming initiatives as other types of entertainment cut into gambling profits.

Construction was deemed an essential business during Arizona’s stay-at-home order related to the coronavirus pandemic and Caesars Republic Scottsdale, located on the northern side of Scottsdale Fashion Square, broke ground in April, according to the city. Scottsdale Planning Commissioner Larry Kush told the Scottsdale Progress newspaper last month that the pandemic might result in a construction delay. HCW Development did not respond to a request for comment on whether the pandemic contributed to a delay in the project.

Underground utilities construction is moving forward on the project at the southeast corner of Goldwater Boulevard and Highland Avenue at the northeast end of Macerich-owned Scottsdale Fashion Square, HCW Chief Executive Richard Huffman said in a statement.

The mall remains closed after being damaged by looting May 31 after a protest in response to the death of George Floyd, a black man who died in the custody of Minneapolis police officers. It is anchored by Neiman Marcus and is recognized for its collection of luxury retailers.

Caesars Entertainment is licensing its brand and offering its Caesars Rewards loyalty program at the hotel. It will be advising HCW on design elements, the developer said.

Celebrity chef Giada De Laurentiis plans to open two restaurants within the hotel, Luna by Giada and Pronto by Giada. The hotel is designed to feature an elevated pool lounge and dining concept on its seventh floor called Seven operated by the Riot Hospitality Group of Scottsdale.

The hotel is planned to include a 7,000-square-foot ballroom with 34-foot sliding glass doors that open onto the lawn for outdoor events hosting up to 600 people.

HCW Hospitality and Aimbridge Hospitality of Plano, Texas will operate the hotel. The hotel project team currently includes BRP Architects of Springfield, Missouri, Studio 11 Interior Design from Dallas and Layton Construction in Phoenix.
