With the Price Corridor working its way toward construction build out, Chandler has turned some of its attention to the Chandler Air Park and recently lured in a big fish.
FedEx Ground on Wednesday broke ground on a 302,000-square-foot package distribution center on the south side of the air park. The facility, which will be the company’s fourth in the Valley, will open in August 2015 and is expected to bring 200 jobs to the city.
The new facility is part of FedEx Ground’s nationwide network expansion plan in which 11 major hubs were added and 500 satellite facilities, of which the Chandler location will be one, were expanded or relocated around the country since 2005. The company’s expansion has accelerated FedEx Ground’s service by at least one day to more than 70 percent of the U.S. since 2003, according to the company.
“This facility will allow us to handle the growth we’ve seen in the southeast Valley,” said Michael Vickers, FedEx Ground district director. “Its location gives us a foothold in our expansion.”
FedEx Ground also selected the Chandler site because of the area’s large and growing population from which to recruit future employees.
Vickers said the company will hire all positions from full-time management to part-time package handlers.
“This will bring direct jobs to Chandler and a service that allows the whole region to grow,” said Barry Broome of the Greater Phoenix Economic Council.
The volume of packages FedEx Ground handles every business day has doubled in the past 10 years, according to the company.
FedEx Ground’s Valley hub is in Phoenix, near the airport, and it has hubs in the West Valley and Tempe.
“This is a significant day for the Chandler Air Park,” Chandler Mayor Jay Tibshraeny said. “This will diversify our jobs in Chandler and provide diversification from the Price Road Corridor. It’s great for this corridor, the Chandler Air Park corridor.”
FedEx Ground delivers more than 82 percent of packages in three days or less, more than 62 percent of packages in two days or less, and more than 24 percent by the next business day, according to the company.
