Michael Salerno  Arizona Republic 1/24/2023

A Vegas-style entertainment hotel that intends to host concerts. A high-end hotel from a renowned restaurateur. A downtown hotel where check-in takes place at the bar.

Hotels and resorts continue to redefine what it means to stay in Phoenix, with a slate of new openings and renovations on the horizon for 2023.

Collectively, these hotels will expand lodging options in the Valley in a time of increasing tourism. From January to November 2022, lodging in Arizona generated $4.8 billion in gross sales and about $251 million in tourism taxes, according to the Arizona Office of Tourism. Both figures are up 29% from 2021.

Whether you’re looking for a room with apartment-style features, a luxury hotel with ample space for relaxation or a resort with a European-style beach, new hotels catering to those interests are coming to the Valley. Here are the hotels scheduled to open in metro Phoenix in 2023.

January: Egyptian Motor Hotel

This former midcentury hotel along Grand Avenue in Phoenix is getting a new life as a modern boutique with nods to the past — or, as the hotel’s executive Gene Kornota said, “a mix of rock ‘n’ roll and retro.” The original sign still adorns the front, complete with the blocky palm tree design. Inside the rooms, people will find either a king bed or bunk bed, a dinette table and Bluetooth speakers that resemble Marshall guitar amplifiers. Rooms have a patio view of the hotel’s outdoor entertainment venue Egyptian Live, which has 250 seats and will feature live music, DJs and comedy shows.

March: WaterWalk Phoenix North Happy Valley

WaterWalk is described as a place that blends the hospitality of a hotel with the amenities of apartment-style living. Its upcoming location in the north Phoenix neighborhood of Happy Valley will be its first in Arizona. WaterWalk’s rooms offer home-like amenities such as kitchens, washers and dryers. The grounds have a swimming pool, grills and a pet walk area. WaterWalk lists its opening date as “early 2023”; its website is accepting reservations for stays starting March 1.

April: Omni Tempe Hotel at ASU

Tempe will get a new high-end hotel this spring when Omni Hotels & Resorts opens its third Arizona hotel and second in metro Phoenix. The Omni Tempe Hotel will feature 330 rooms and suites, four restaurants and a rooftop pool. It aims to cater to business travelers with its 36,000 square feet of meeting and event space, and will accept well behaved dogs under 40 pounds.

May: Moxy Phoenix Downtown

The unconventional vibe of the Moxy experience starts at check-in — at a bar instead of a desk. Moxy, a Marriott brand described as “playful, affordable and stylish” and “created for the young at heart,” plans to open its second metro Phoenix hotel in the historic Luhrs Building on the corner of Central Avenue and Jefferson Street. The Moxy’s 164 rooms will include 42-inch flat screen TVs, built-in USB ports and free WiFi. Common areas include a “Plug and Meet” gathering space with seating, a large writing wall and televisions for presentation projection. The Visit Phoenix tourism agency said it expects the Moxy to open in May; reservations aren’t yet available on the hotel’s website.

Fall 2023: Ritz-Carlton Paradise Valley, The Palmeraie

This luxury hotel near Scottsdale bills itself as “an exclusive sanctuary,” incorporating calming features like 20 acres of landscapes including secret gardens, a secluded meditation garden and a two-story spa with 11 treatment rooms. There also are opportunities for fun, whether it’s a dip in the hotel’s 400-foot swimming pool or sipping cocktails at the lobby bar. The 215-room hotel will overlook dramatic views of Camelback Mountain.

Fall 2023: Global Ambassador from Sam Fox

The first hotel from restaurateur Sam Fox, the Global Ambassador aims to evoke a worldly aura. Renderings show the exterior’s Parisian architecture influence, and its five restaurants will feature food from around the world. The 141-room hotel will edge Camelback Mountain, offering guests striking views of the landscape, most notably through its 18,000-square-foot open rooftop. The hotel is expected to open in the fall, according to its developer, Common Bond Development Group. Local celebrities including Devin Booker, Larry Fitzgerald and Dierks Bentley have lent their names to the project, and a Food Network chef has been tapped to lead the kitchen at the hotel’s restaurant, theà.

Late 2023: VAI Resort

VAI Resort aims to upend the landscape of metro Phoenix tourism. When it opens across the street from State Farm Stadium in Glendale, VAI will have the most rooms of any hotel in Arizona: 1,200 rooms and suites. (The hotel that currently has the most rooms in Arizona, the Sheraton Phoenix Downtown, counts 1,003 rooms.) The 60-acre resort will boast Mediterranean-style white-sand beaches and a 360-degree concert stage designed to host A-list music and comedy acts. VAI Resort President Grant Fisher told The Arizona Republic his goal with the resort is to make Phoenix competitive with Las Vegas as an entertainment tourism destination.

JW Marriott Phoenix Desert Ridge Resort & Spa

A refresh of JW Marriott’s Desert Ridge hotel is timed with its 20th year in business. Changes include guest room enhancements such as in-room fireplaces and Peloton bikes and a new flagship restaurant, Tía Carmen. An $18 million renovation and expansion of the pool area will introduce a new family area with cabanas near the lazy river, an adults-only pool area called Sky Island and three new water slides. The water slides — a new amenity for the resort — will include the Boomerango, described as the first vertical wall slide at a resort west of the Mississippi River.

Omni Scottsdale Resort & Spa at Montelucia

While Omni’s second metro Phoenix hotel is preparing its debut in Tempe, its first — Omni Scottsdale Resort & Spa at Montelucia — is getting a refresh. So far, renovations have been completed at the Oasis Pool and Joya Spa. Work recently started on the Joya Terrace Pool Deck, and renovations to rooms and meeting spaces are expected later this year.
