Arizona small businesses continue to increase hiring

Arizona small businesses continued steady, modest hiring in January, marking five consecutive months of growth, according to the latest Small Business Index from Intuit Payroll.

In January, employment at Arizona’s small companies inched up 0.03 percent, which despite being a hair lower than December’s 0.04 percent showing, marked the fifth straight month of increased hiring at the state’s small firms.

Nationwide, small businesses added 20,000 jobs in January, good for a 0.11 percent increase, which improved on the 15,000 new jobs and 0.09 percent uptick in December. The data is based on numbers from approximately 171,000 small business customers of Intuit Online Payroll and QuickBooks Online Payroll.

Intuit’s index provides insight into employment and revenue trends of the country’s small businesses, which are defined as firms with fewer than 20 employees.

Though small businesses continued their run of modest hiring, revenues continued their modest declines. In December, revenues at small businesses nationwide dipped 0.4 percent. Construction was the sole industry to see an increase, at 0.3 percent. The real estate and retail industries saw the biggest drop-offs, at 0.8 percent each.

Small business revenues are gradually recovering from recessionary depths, but are just now reaching levels seen before the recession began in 2007.

Revenue index results are based on anonymous aggregated data from QuickBooks Online, and run one month behind the employment and payroll numbers making December’s results the most current.

Average monthly pay for small business employees decreased to $2,676 in January, or 0.2 percent. Monthly hours worked decreased 0.9 percent in January, corresponding to 105.1 hours for the month.
