By Hayley Ringle  – Reporter, Phoenix Business Journal  Dec 4, 2019

A free passion project started three years ago by an experienced Valley tech executive has compiled information on more than 500 active software-as-a-service companies in Arizona.

The list is a testament to the state’s burgeoning software and technology growth, said Greg Head, who has more than 30 years experience in the business.

“It’s a much different world than the ‘90s when there were maybe a dozen software companies [in the Valley] and we all knew each other,” said Head, who moved to Scottsdale in 1996 to help start Scottsdale-based CRM software firm SalesLogix Corp., the platform now known as Infor CRM. “In the last 10 years there’s been an explosion of software companies in metro Phoenix. It’s easier now to create software companies for the web.”

When Head started his “Gregslist of Arizona Software Companies” website in August 2016, it included slightly more than 150 companies.

The latest version of the comprehensive list now outlines 507 active commercial software companies in the state, including 90 regional offices of software companies based outside of Arizona, Head said.

“I wanted to focus on this because it’s a huge industry onto itself, and that’s the industry I came out of,” said Head, who also helped grow Chandler-based Infusionsoft, now Keap, as its chief marketing officer. “I wanted to connect investors and talent with these software companies so everyone could talk to each other.”

As founder and CEO of Scaling Point LLC, which Head started in Phoenix in late 2017, he works with software firm founders and tech startups around the U.S. on marketing strategy and growth consulting.

He likes to point out that people have found jobs, received investment and even moved to Arizona because of connections made on Gregslist. Since the site launched, it has received more than 50,000 unique visitors, he added.

To be on the list, which is updated monthly, the company has to have an active commercial product based in Arizona or has a large remote office in the state. The list does not include software development services companies.

Here are some recent stats Head discovered from his list:

  • 55% of the software companies are self funded.
  • 9% are funded with venture capital.
  • 21% have angel or seed funding.
  • 45% are industry focused, with a focus, for example, on just health care, media or education.
  • More than 90% are business-to-business software companies and not consumer oriented.
  • Only three software startups are outside of Maricopa County and Tucson.
  • 37% of the companies are in Scottsdale and 34% are in Phoenix, representing 70% of the total.
  • 57 women-led software companies in Arizona, which is 14% of the list.
  • 60% of companies have fewer than 50 employees.
  • 17% of the largest companies, with more than 50 employees, account for 75% of the software jobs in the state.
  • There is an estimated 32,000 direct employees with these Arizona software companies, producing an industry larger than the number of people employed in the golf industry, which is around 25,000.
  • Some of the largest software companies include Axon Enterprise Inc. (Nasdaq: AAXN), Axway, Early Warning Services, GlobalTranz, GoDaddy Inc. (NYSE: GDDY), Nextiva and JDA Software.
  • 10% of companies are less than 2 years old, while 54% are 3 to 10 years old. This corresponds to the growth in web software since it’s easier than ever to create software on the web.

While Head moved to the Dallas area in July, he continues to maintain and update the Phoenix list with the help of a full-time and part-time employee.

He started a Gregslist for the Dallas-Forth Worth area in August and plans to start another list soon for Salt Lake City. His goal is to create Gregslists for 10 cities next year.

“I have a simple funding partnership model coming to help with expansions,” Head said. “People are asking for it all over. In every software ecosystem, no one is making a list and keeping it up.”

While he previously self-funded the site, Head is talking to economic development directors and tech leaders to get sponsorships and contributions to expand the website and get help to keep up with the data.

An expanded version of Gregslist in January will include 20-30 new specialty lists broken out by various categories to make the site more useful, he said.

“The magic is the site is curated,” Head said. “These are my people, my friends that I care about. This is updated and accurate.”
