Arizona’s monsoon season is a fascinating and dynamic period that brings dramatic changes to the state’s weather patterns and landscape. From mid-June to late September, this annual phenomenon delivers intense thunderstorms, spectacular lightning displays, and crucial rainfall to the arid Southwest.

Here are 8 intriguing facts about Arizona’s monsoon season that showcase its unique characteristics and significant impact on the region.

Arizona receives approximately 31.5% of its total annual rainfall during the monsoon season. This concentrated period of precipitation is crucial for the region’s water supply and ecosystem.

The monsoon season officially runs from June 15 to September 30, as established by the National Weather Service in 2008. Prior to this, the start was determined by three consecutive days with dew points of at least 55 degrees.

Nearly 500,000 lightning strikes occur during a typical monsoon season in Arizona. These strikes can be dangerous and are often visible from great distances.

Monsoons can trigger massive dust storms known as “haboobs,” which can create walls of dust hundreds of feet high. These impressive and potentially hazardous phenomena are a hallmark of Arizona’s monsoon season.

The wettest monsoon on record in Phoenix occurred in 1984, with 9.56 inches of rain falling at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. This demonstrates the significant variability in monsoon intensity from year to year.

Monsoon storms can produce several hazards, including dust, wind damage, and flash flooding. As little as 6 inches of flowing water can sweep a person off their feet, while 24 inches can wash away a car.

The monsoon season brings out unique desert wildlife, including Gila monsters and tarantulas, which become more active during periods of high humidity.     The distinctive “smell of rain” in the Sonoran Desert during monsoon season is primarily attributed to the creosote bush, though recent research suggests that at least 60 different aromatic plants may contribute to this iconic scent.
