CG City Council OKs rezone for amusement park

CASA GRANDE — The Casa Grande City Council voted 7-0 Wednesday night to approve a rezone change of 1,500 acres for a proposed amusement park, setting the stage for the massive project to begin construction.
The land along Interstate 8 was rezoned for a planned area development to include Dreamport Villages, a proposed extreme sports park.
The Block Sports Group, parent company of Dreamport Villages, also plans to include residential and commercial spaces.
Dreamport Villages received a favorable recommendation from the Planning and Zoning Commission in March.
In Wednesday’s special meeting the council also approved a development agreement with Block Sports.
The heart of the agreement will be a $124 million retail sales tax incentive. Block sports will receive the $124 million rebate after infrastructure improvements are made, including a traffic interchange at Henness Road.
With the Dreamport project, the city will not be giving any rebates until much of the infrastructure is in place and the company can begin to generate sales taxes. Cameron Carter, an attorney representing The Block Sports Group, told the council last week the project would be constructed in multiple phases, with the first phase being a $1.2 billion investment, including $300 million on the infrastructure — $124 million of which Block Sports would get back in the form of sales tax rebates.
