If you’re planning to spend any time out in the extreme heat, even just resting, you’re going to want to drink one 16-ounce bottle of water per hour to keep your body hydrated.
That means if you’re out during the hottest parts of the day, between 10 a.m. and 7 p.m., you want to put down nine bottles total.
And if that time is spent outside working or hiking, double that number. Be ready to drink two 16-ounce bottles per hour. That’s amount the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends to outdoor workers in extreme heat.
By mid-afternoon Sunday, temperatures were hitting 118 degrees at Piestewa Peak in Phoenix, but that didn’t stop people from hiking and even running the trail.
“I’ve got water. [I’ll] get some nice sun, shouldn’t be too many people out here. We’ll go until I get tired and if I feel a little lethargic I’ll turn around and come back down,” said hiker Brett Troeger.

Park rangers are taking shifts at the park, advising visitors to be careful, offering water and assistance to anyone who needs it.
“If they’re not a regular, if they don’t do this every day, if they don’t usually exercise in the heat, we may want to try to convince them to come back when it’s not so hot or at least make sure that they have adequate amounts of water with them,” said Chris Webb, City of Phoenix park ranger.
In addition to water, your body also needs electrolytes. Bring a salty snack, like peanuts, if you’re going to be outside.
