The Phoenix area has been building a foodie culture for years, but it turns out its neighbors to the south got the recognition as a gastronomy capital of the world.

Tucson was recognized last week by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, as one of 47 cities honored for their cultural accomplishments. In the case of the Southern Arizona city, the recognition was for food.

It became the first U.S. city recognized for food by UNESCO. Ensenada, Mexico also was recognized for food along with seven other cities. Recognitions also were handed out to cities for their work in cultural and folk arts, film, design, literature, media arts and music.

UNESCO’s goal for the program is to highlight cities that are doing unique things in their category. According to the city of Tucson’s application, that’s exactly what they are doing, citing that the area is big in food production and there are more than 1,200 restaurants that employ more than 30,000 people.

The application also cited work by local food banks as well as the University of Arizona’s Kellogg Program on a Border Food Summit. It also says it has longest history of agriculture of any city in North America. You can read the application here.

“The UNESCO Creative Cities Network presents an opportunity for Tucson to be represented on the world stage,” said Tucson Mayor Jonathan Rothschild in a prepared statement. “Tucson is a destination city for people who love great food, and this confirms it.”

It certainly won’t hurt Tucson’s marketing efforts for all those winter visitors that are just gearing up for their annual trips and bringing their disposable income with them.

Phoenix, to be fair, has a lot of that. And it’s growing foodie market has seen multiple restaurants spring up. Even if it’s got a new rival for recognition.
