The WNBA will bring its All-Star game back to the Valley in 2024.

WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert announced Saturday, ahead of the 2023 All-Star game in Las Vegas, that the women’s professional basketball league will play its annual showcase game at Footprint Center in downtown Phoenix in July 2024.

The move comes after the owners of the Phoenix Mercury and the Phoenix Suns, along with the city of Phoenix and several other community entities, submitted bids to host All-Star games for both the WNBA and NBA. This will be the third time the WNBA has hosted the event in Phoenix, most recently in 2014.

“The WNBA is excited to bring AT&T WNBA All-Star back to Phoenix for the third time in our nearly three-decade history,” Engelbert said in a statement. “Having an inaugural WNBA franchise in the Mercury host this two-day celebration is perfect as the basketball world focuses its eyes on the WNBA and today’s greatest stars.”

Suns owner Mat Ishbia told the Business Journal that being named the host city and arena is a sign that the league approves not only what the team is doing, but also what the city is doing.

“To get that nod and get that opportunity to host the WNBA All-Star game next year is really a big deal for our city, a big deal for our team, and really just a sign of what we’re all about creating, making Phoenix one of the destinations for women’s basketball – and for all basketball – across America,” Ishbia said.

WNBA All-Star game should bring big crowds to downtown Phoenix

The WNBA All-Star game is a two-day event with a skills competition on Friday and the game on Saturday. For the past two seasons the league has hosted a fan festival called “WNBA Live.”

The festivities are expected to bring hundreds of people to downtown Phoenix who normally wouldn’t be there in the summer. Ishbia said the team is starting to work with local businesses to help prepare for the event and make sure everyone in downtown gets something from having the game there.

“We’re going to make sure we engage in all aspects of the community from youth girls sports, to business owners, to restaurants, to hotels,” Ishbia said. “We’re making this a whole thing. This is not about the Mercury; this is about the city of Phoenix.”

The game is coming to Phoenix as more fan, corporate and investment interest has come into the WNBA this season and is only expected to grow.

Across the WNBA, attendance is up 27% for the first half of the 2023 season compared to the same timeframe a year ago. And the Sports Business Journal reported that WNBA league revenue is at an all-time high.

Even with all these successes, Ishbia said he wants to grow the women’s game and its presence in the Valley and the U.S. even more.

“Women’s basketball is at a high, high level, and I don’t think it gets enough recognition across the country,” Ishbia said. “We’re going to do everything we can to elevate the game.”

The WNBA All-Star game is the first of two major women’s basketball events happening in downtown Phoenix within a two-year span. In 2026, the NCAA will also host the Women’s Final Four at the Footprint Center.
