Arizona’s 7.3 percent unemployment rate remained unchanged from February to March, but the state did add 17,100 private sector jobs last month.
Without seasonal adjustments, the jobless rates in the Phoenix metro area and the state actually increased in March.
The Valley’s unadjusted jobless rate was 6.4 percent in March, up from 6.1 percent in February. Economists work seasonal adjustments into the unemployment rates to take into account weather and other fluctuations with industries and hiring.
The raw statewide unemployment rate was also 7.3 percent in March — unchanged from February.
Businesses added 17,100 jobs in March, according to the Arizona Department of Administration. That is better than the average of 13,100 private sector job gains in March for the past 10 years.
Manufacturers in Arizona added 700 jobs. Part of that could be from Apple Inc.’s new up and running plant in Mesa. Construction contractors added 2,900 jobs in March.
The public sector trimmed 1,500 positions statewide in March. Some of those were due to schools and public colleges being on spring break.
