This year’s best job — mathematician — outscored all other professions onCareerCast’s 2014 Jobs Rated Report, as Arizona works to increase STEM education to prepare students for knowledge jobs.
There is significant demand for workers trained in science, technology, engineering and math fields, but experts say not enough students are pursuing degrees in STEM areas to meet demands.
“In today’s data-driven economy, math skills unlock a world of career opportunities,” says Tony Lee, publisher ofCareerCast. “In fact, the outlook for all STEM careers is very positive, as evidenced by many of this year’s best jobs — mathematician, statistician, actuary, software engineer and computer systems analyst.”
In 2013 the median annual pay for mathematicians was $101,360, and the profession has a projected growth rate of 23 percent by 2022.
Ever since the Sputnik era, fascinating careers have been open to women and men with an education grounded in math, science and engineering, said William Harris, president and CEO of Science Foundation Arizona.
“And today that continues to be the case — particularly educations that include computer science and software engineering,” he said. “Modern biology and medicine are now advanced by information science and the same can be said for aerospace and defense.”
The modern automobile might be described as computer controlled in all areas and that means hardware and software career opportunities, he said.
“Our K-12 school robotics teams provide a great opportunity for talented kids to excel and perhaps seed the next Elon Musk — founder of SpaceX and Tesla,” Harris said. “So, a great STEM education is a foundation for company creation and high paying jobs.”
Three years ago, Jeremy Babendure created the Arizona SciTech Festival to build STEM culture in the state. This year, about 450 collaborators attracted more than 300,000 attendees at various programs throughout the state.
“People are talking about the importance of STEM being in the future,” Babendure said. “We think that is only going to increase.”
Margaret Mullen, COO of Science Foundation Arizona, said the best hope for Arizona’s students to compete for high-quality jobs is to stand firm on the rigor offered by Arizona’s College and Career Ready Standards.
“Outcomes also need to be measured,” she said, “and get parents, teachers and business and community leaders to scream from the rooftops the importance of standing firm on the rigor of that process. If we would do that, we would have a better educated population that vote, elect people who care about Arizona’s economic future and become engaged in broader public policy.”

Before the real estate crash I was a land specialist in Arizona with millions of dollars of transactions, but then I had to change and also sell other commercial investment properties, which was fun, but I am a Commercial Landspecialist in Arizonal, a Commercial Land Specialist in Phoenix and love to sell land, one acre to thousands of acres.
