Businesses relocate or open in Scottsdale for a variety of reasons: the weather, the restaurants, the beautiful scenery. But there’s a lot more to it than that.

When Google named Scottsdale the digital capital, or eCity, of the state in August, I wanted to discover why Scottsdale businesses chose the city and how technology plays into that.

Check out my full cover story here.

Hayley Ringle covers technology and startups for the Phoenix Business Journal.

It was one surprise after another Thursday when the 25 employees of Scottsdale-based Martz Agency were told their company was bought by GoDaddy founder and Valley philanthropist and entrepreneurBob Parsons.

At first, there was concern and shock when CEO Carrie Martz told her employees Parsons’ company, MP Agency LLC, had bought their 33-year-old agency.

But the concern turned to jubilation when employees were brought outside to walk to a new office space the company will take over in January. Parsons greeted employees with four Phoenix Suns dancers and a marching band, because “nothing Bob does is small,” Martz said.

“There were high fives all around, and when Bob addressed the group everyone was applauding and smiling,” said Martz, who will remain CEO of the newly named Martz Parsons.

Parsons recognized Anna Hoang, who has worked for Martz for 19 years as assistant controller and was instrumental in helping the agency with the acquisition. Hoang was given an engraved pen with the new agency name and a $5,000 bonus.

Each employee also will be given a $500 bonus for every year they’ve been with the agency. Three employees had eight years with the company, Martz said.

Parsons talked about the improved employee benefits, including three weeks of vacation the first year of employment and six weeks of vacation after five years with the agency.

New computers if needed and the new office space, which is 3,000 square feet larger than the current one, were some of the perks Parsons announced.

“It’s really unheard of,” Martz said. “His philosophy is we’re in a very competitive, tough business and he wants people well rested so they can come to work and be the best they can be. That’s how he grew GoDaddy.”

Parsons also asked when the company Christmas party was. The date, Dec. 15, has been set, but Parsons assured the group they will have a bigger party than planned.

Under Parsons’ helm, GoDaddy was known for its extravagant holiday parties at Chase Field with well-known musicians, comedians, prizes and open bar for employees and family members.

Martz Parsons plans to hire another 25 employees within the next year to keep up with the expanded business, Martz said.

The acquisition has been seven months in the making. When Martz was originally approached by Parsons, he was looking at at least 10 other Valley agencies throughout the “arduous” process, Martz said.

“I’ve always been a big fan of Bob and his marketing for years from the very beginning of when he started GoDaddy,” Martz said. “When I got the call, it was nothing I had ever thought about. It just seemed like it would be a perfect fit. Bob really believes in marketing. He is all about taking care of customers and employees and doing really great work.”

Martz said the opportunity is “refreshing” because now she can rely on Parsons’ “incredible” resources and she can focus on helping her clients’ businesses grow.

“It’s tough to be a small business and keep up with the changes in technology and demands with constant recapitalization,” Martz said.

The process included a test as Parsons hired the agency to do some work for him.

“They liked our work and got to know our culture,” Martz said. “We went into due diligence and were selected about two months ago. I didn’t tell anyone because I didn’t want anyone to be disappointed if it didn’t go through, or too anxious if it did.” READ MORE….
