New Zealand-based Orion Health has selected Scottsdale for the North American and United Kingdom headquarters of its health care populations division, bringing hundreds of jobs to the region within the next three years.
The Orion Scottsdale Center of Excellence will be based in an already expanding 10,000 square feet at the Scottsdale Airpark.The company plans to hire 100 within the next year and an additional 300 to 400 over the following three years.
The average salary of the Orion jobs will be around $88,000 annually.
The Center of Excellence will be developing integrated big data and patient experience software, including infrastructure architecture, for providers to improve care with better information about each patient.
Orion, a global provider of health care software, plans to open a second 10,000 square feet in December and has options on another 16,000 square feet of adjoining space. The company also took a first-right-of-refusal option on an adjoining data center.
Scottsdale beat out Nashville, Atlanta and Raleigh for the Orion center.
Resources from Arizona Commerce Authority and Scottsdale played major roles in convincing the company to move to Arizona, said Dave Bennett, Orion Health’s executive vice president of the health care populations division. One of three for the multinational company, HCP generates half the organization’s revenue.
North Carolina lays claim to the Research Triangle, but Bennett said that there are better research attractions in the Phoenix market.
“We are doing cutting-edge big data analytics, and this is very attractive to graduates from (Arizona State University) and (Grand Canyon University),” he said. “I’m competing with Silicon Valley for these graduates, and when they see the type of software as a service we want to develop, they’re staying here.”
Bennett is attracting candidates from New Zealand as well as other states. Orion provides SaaS IT solutions for health care providers. The company plans to use the Scottsdale center’s innovation capacity to evolve integrated data systems enhancing patient experience.
Bennett said the company will be hiring more software engineers, application specialists and it needs clinicians because of the type of product it creates. The specialists an clinicians will be part of the international training program Orion will offer customers in Scottsdale.
“We’re finding great talent at ASU, especially with its biomedical centers and the planned development at Mayo. We have great opportunities with the high density of health care providers,” Bennett said. “With Mayo Clinic, Dignity Healthcare, and the education at ASU and GCU’s health care IT program, the talent we need is right here in the Valley.”
The offices are collaborative designs with high, open ceilings, whiteboard walls and an open floor plate.
“There are Apple TVs throughout for standup meetings, show-and-go analysis and collaborating work groups,” Bennett added. “These young people are seeing our environment and how we’re enhancing patient experience with our products and they want to work here.”
Bennett was the founder of Cyclone Commerce in Scottsdale in 1996 and is excited about returning to the Valley.
“I personally like Arizona,” he said. “I think it’s important to offer jobs that help keep graduates in the area and attract good people from outside to top-paying jobs.”
