We live in Phoenix.  One of the realities of living in the desert is that we moved into neighborhoods that were home to all sorts of critters like rattlesnakes and scorpions.  Occasionally we encounter one and if you’re not prepared it can be a matter of life and death.

Somewhat like being in the wrong neighborhood in Baltimore or Detroit or Chicago, except our rattlesnakes are not natural predators of the same order as the residents of those neighborhoods.
