Maricopa County officially accepted an agreement with the Arizona Diamondbacks that ends the lawsuit between the two over repairs to Chase Field.
The county Board of Supervisors, acting as the Maricopa County Stadium District Board of Directors, approved the memorandum of understanding with the D-backs. Under the deal, the baseball team will assume all responsibility for operation, management, maintenance, repair, replacement and physical work at its home ballpark in downtown Phoenix.
The MOU also allows the D-backs to explore options to modify, remodel or rebuild Chase Field immediately. The team will play at Chase until 2022, unless it finds another site within the county before then.
“This deal represents the best chance to keep the Diamondbacks in Arizona for the foreseeable future, which has been a goal of ours all along,” said Steve Chucri, District 2 Supervisor and chairman of the stadium district board, in a statement.
Chucri added the deal allows the county to get out from under paying for repairs with taxpayer money.
Approval of the MOU puts an end to litigation between the county and team, which have tussled over $187 million worth of repairs and maintenance work at the county-owned ballpark.
The Diamondbacks also agree under the deal to pay a buyout fee between $5 million and $25 million if the team leaves Maricopa County following the 2022 season.
The MOU runs through 2027.
Maricopa County will hand over reserve funds held for work at Chase Field to the D-backs. The team will be required to use the funds in the same way and provide an accounting of their use.
Chase Field opened in 1998 for the D-backs’ debut season.
The D-backs also could eye other potential sites around greater Phoenix, including near its spring training home along Loop 101 near Scottsdale.
