Loop 101 quickly growing into Phoenix’s High Tech Highway

Life is a dream for the wise, a game for the fool,

a comedy for the rich, a tragedy for the poor.

When all the high technology companies across Phoenix are placed on a map, Loop 101 in the East Valley takes on a whole new look.

A new map available from Cushman & Wakefield Technology Group leadersMatthew Coxhead and Ryan Bartos shows the burgeoning technology company corridor running down the Pima and Price freeways from North Scottsdale to the southern bounds of Chandler.

The High Tech Highway shows the growing clusters of knowledge-based and manufacturing technology businesses bubbling up along the corridor.

“There are four centers along the 101,” said Coxhead. “Downtown Phoenix is another starting to show potential because of the historic warehouse district.”

Chandler’s Price Corridor, downtown Tempe, Old Town Scottsdale and Kierland all are showing signs of attracting and building technology companies. The manufacturing side is heavily weighted to the south in Chandler with advanced knowledge services running northward.

“There are technology companies elsewhere, of course,” said Bartos. “We’re seeing much more leasing activity in the clusters where there is a strong mix of urban amenities, nearby residential, and new or adaptable buildings. This is the kind of setting where companies attracting millennials want to set up shop.”

Coxhead said there is demand for creative and collaborative work spaces, but owners of existing buildings express concerns about technology costs.

“We try to work with our owners to understand the needs of business today,” he said.

The two brokers are the leaders of CW Technology Group in the Valley. The laser-focused group has its own website, CushWakeTechBeat.com/Phoenix.

“Startups are making noise about locating in the Valley,” said Coxhead. “This is drawing attention from a lot of other tech companies.”

The stodgy image of Phoenix for retirees is starting the change, said Bartos.

“Some of our tech CEOs are talking up the Valley in the industry, and that is making a difference other companies are starting to notice,” he said.

The pair and their CW Tech Group team created a map of the Valley showing the concentrations of technology companies through the Phoenix metro. The patterns are clearly discernible.
