Google’s high-speed Internet ‘network huts’ could soon cover Phoenix

Google-run, high-speed Internet “network huts” could soon be dotting the Phoenix landscape.

The Phoenix City Council is considering an ordinance today to lease 30 to 40 parcels of public land to Google Inc. The technology giant will build the so-called “network huts” as part of its possible high-speed Internet fiber-optic system it could bring to the Valley.

Google announced in February that Phoenix was being considered for its next high-speed Internet network, Google Fiber. The company already has such a system up and running in Provo, Utah, Austin and Kansas City.

The city of Phoenix would allow Google to locate 30 to 40 huts of about 1,400 square feet each on municipal land.

Phoenix would only charge Google a $2.75-per-square-foot fee for the huts.

That translates into about $154,000 annually for 40 such structures, according to city documents.

Google spokeswoman Jenna Wandresssaid on the outside huts are more akin to a storage shed than they are to a type of high-tech data center, and they are about 6-feet by 11-feet in size.

But on the inside the hut contains fiber-optic equipment and lines that link between a regional network that circles a metropolitan area and then neighborhood “cabinets” that connect to residences and businesses.

Wandress said the huts will be located in unobtrusive locations such as water treatment plants or adjacent to parking lots.

Google announced in February that Phoenix was among several U.S. cities selected as possible sites for the company’s high-speed Internet network.

Mountain View, Calif.-based Google also announced in February it was considering Portland, Raleigh, N.C., Salt Lake City, San Jose, Charlotte, N.C. Atlanta, Nashville, Tenn. and San Antonio for its high-speed network.
