Local Motors Inc., a Chandler-based company that manufactures a 3D-printed, autonomous, electric shuttle vehicle, is relocating its Chandler headquarters and expanding its East Valley footprint.

The company signed a 10,000-square-foot lease at 7400 W. Detroit St., which will be 80% office space with the remaining 20% used for research and development. The new space is about 2.5 miles from the company’s former headquarters.

“Our new space is uniquely suited for the types of development efforts and collaboration we need in order to design, build, and deploy electric autonomous shuttles,” Matt Bourland, a company spokesman, said. “Chandler has a growing mobility and technology ecosystem and our company has been in the region for over a decade.”

The company’s vehicle, named Olli, is already in use around the world, including in hospitals, universities and military bases.

“Chandler has been focused on growing our autonomous vehicle industry, and we are excited to see Local Motors sign this new lease in our community,” Chandler Mayor Kevin Hartke said in a statement. “We look forward to working alongside Local Motors as they continue to innovate with new products, and we wish them many years of success at their new headquarters in Chandler.”

The company currently has 63 employees in Chandler. In 2019, Local Motors had 145 employees, with 56 in Chandler. In a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act noticed filed with the state in May, the automaker said it was laying off 49 employees because of the pandemic.

Local Motors’ new facility will be more compatible with the company’s future growth and allows more access to the broader technology community, company officials said. The company is growing in Chandler and Knoxville, Tennessee, where it has micro-factories, and in Europe, but there is no specific hiring timeline for the Chandler location now. Local Motors has a relationship with Arizona State University, including internships and capstone projects for students, and hiring initiatives for new college graduates.

“Local Motors is continuing to rapidly evolve our electric, autonomous shuttle, Olli,” Bourland said. “In 2021, we’re excited to deploy the vehicle in more locations and help provide safe, modern and sustainable transportation.”

Waymo, Google’s self-driving car subsidiary, also has its primary location in Chandler, where it has conducted much of testing for its self-driving technology. Other companies in Chandler are also working on the automotive technology supply chain, including Intel, Rogers Corp., Garmin, NXP, Maxim Integrated and ARM.

Arizona is a growing market for electric carmakers. Here’s a quick look at the other activity in that sector in the region:

  • Lucid Motors has completed the first phase of construction on its new electric vehicle plant in Casa Grande, south of Phoenix in Pinal County. Company officials say they’re on track to begin production there in early 2021.
  • Zero-emissions vehicle maker Nikola Corp. has a factory under construction in Coolidge. That facility broke ground on July 23, and phase one is expected to be finished before the end of 2021.
  • ElectraMeccanica Vehicles Corp., a Vancouver, British Columbia-based electric vehicle maker, has narrowed its search for a U.S. manufacturing site to the greater Phoenix area and the greater Nashville area. A decision could reportedly be made in a matter of weeks.
  • Mesa-based Atlis Motor Vehicles also is developing an all-electric work pickup and vehicle platform.
