Exciting announcement from Banner Health slated to open a full service sports medicine facility on the Salt River Pima – Maricopa Indian Community.
Another testament of #growth as the tribal land continues to serve as a major draw for #commercialrealestate developers and #companies that require larger parcels of land that are more than difficult to obtain in Scottsdale.

Banner Health and developer The Alter Group are preparing to build a $54 million sports medicine center at the Riverwalk at Talking Stick on the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community east of Scottsdale.
The 3-story, 80,000-square foot building, which will be located at Loop 101 at Indian Bend Road, is expected open in the fourth quarter of 2022, according to Banner Health. The building is currently being designed.
Services offered at the new facility will include orthopedics and sports medicine, surgery, physical therapy, imaging, a concussion center, performance training, nutrition and sports psychology.
Lisa Mukavitsz, system assistant vice president of orthopedics, sports medicine and neurosciences for Banner Health, said there is no existing facility like this in the Valley. It will serve as a one-stop shop for everyone from average citizens to elite athletes, for sports medicine needs, she said.
“We want to provide comprehensive care for the community,” she said. “This meets the needs of athletes, and I use the term ‘athletes’ broadly, because in a way we are all athletes.”
Mukavitsz said normally a person might go to surgery at one location, physical therapy at another and imaging at another, yet often those places are run by different companies so there can be extra steps involved in the process. With the new facility, entire teams — especially youth sports and other amateur teams — can all be seen and cared for in one location.
The new facility will be used not just for rehabilitation of sports injuries, but also for improvement in sports performance through services such as nutritional consultations and sports psychology.
Banner has partnerships with some Arizona professional teams as well, including the Diamondbacks, Suns and Mercury, as well as the University of Arizona. Mukavitsz said that while the teams have their own dedicated training facilities, the new facility will also be used for professional athletes seeking care outside their normal space.
The plans for a comprehensive, sports-related facility have been in the works for a couple of years, Mukavitsz said.
Richard Gatto, executive vice president with Alter, the master developer of Riverwalk, said the state-of-the-art sports medicine center will benefit the mixed-use office and entertainment development and the area as a whole.
“It really showcases the Riverwalk,” he said, as it will be a facility that attracts people from across Arizona and even from other states.
The project architect is HKS Inc. Other project partners, in addition to Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community, include Select Medical, Banner’s joint venture physical therapy and rehabilitation hospitals partner (Banner Physical Therapy), and Atlas Healthcare Partners, Banner’s joint venture ambulatory surgery partner (Banner Surgery Centers).
“The whole 101 area has come into vogue in the past few years,” Gatto said, adding that the sports medicine facility will benefit the office portion of the Riverwalk, which includes both office and entertainment uses.
The tribal land has become a draw for commercial developers and companies looking for larger areas, which can be difficult to come by in Scottsdale. Tribal leadership has said they are welcoming to development that fits their standards and want to see the developments in the area succeed.
