Apartments spurring Arizona construction gains, commercial building still down

Continued apartment developments and a rebound in new home building are propelling growth in Arizona’s construction industry.

But construction of new offices, warehouses and shopping centers are still lagging and down 4 percent compared to last year, according to the research firm Dodge Data & Analytics.

The New York-based firm shows residential construction, including apartments and condos, make up more than 74 percent of the building activity in Maricopa and Pinal counties for the first 10 months of the year.

Residential construction is up 29 percent over the first 10 months of 2014, according to Dodge.

While there is some commercial construction in Tempe, Chandler and industrial parks along Interstate 10, most of the construction cranes and sites dotting the Valley landscape are for multifamily developments.

The U.S. Commerce Department reported today that construction activity is growing and at its highest level since December 2007 and the start of the last recession.
