Arizona’s economy added 25,900 jobs in November — many of them in retail, restaurants and hotels.
The November 2013 job gains are the highest in November since 2005, according to new numbers out today from the Arizona Department of Administration. Many of the retail and hospitality industry hires are seasonal positions and the pay in those sectors tends to be lower than average.
State economists report Arizona added 15,400 retail and wholesale trade jobs last month with retailers and distributors hiring temporary workers for the Christmas and holiday shopping season. Bars, restaurants and hotels added 1,900 jobs with the Valley’s tourism and holiday-party season gearing up, according to DOA. Finance, insurance and banking businesses added another 2,100 jobs statewide last month.
The statewide unemployment rate came in at 7.8 percent in November. That’s down from 8.2 percent in October and 8 percent one year ago.
In the Valley, the jobless rate stands 6 percent.
The Phoenix area accounted for 23,300 of the total jobs created in the state last month. That included 2,400 hires at bars, restaurants and hotels and 11,700 for retail and wholesale trade positions.
