Apartment developer P.B. Bell Cos. andDavis Enterprises LLC have been picked to redevelop the city-owned Barrister Place building in downtown Phoenix.
Davis and Bell are looking at a project with residential, retail and commercial components. A second structure also is planned to along with the existing Barrister building.
The building is at Central Avenue and Jefferson Street, just west of US Airways Center and south of CityScape. It is best known for being featured in Alfred Hitchcock’s 1960 film “Psycho.”
There were seven bidders for the property.
“The Barrister building is an iconic piece of downtown Phoenix history, and we are honored to be involved in helping write its next chapter,” said Mike Trueman, vice president of development for P.B. Bell.
The building opened in 1915 as the Jefferson Hotel. At six stories, it once was the tallest building in Arizona. The city has owned it since 1990.
“We are two legacy companies working together on a legacy project,” said Mark Davis, partner of Davis Enterprises, which has redeveloped some Valley shopping center and done other commercial projects in the region.
