The city of Phoenix is on the verge of landing 1,000 new jobs and a $23.7 million expansion of Farmers Insurance Exchange in North Phoenix.

The city of will invest $500,000 in workforce training funds. Phoenix was selected after a multi-state site selection competition.

The win is an expansion of the company’s 500-employee workforce in the Valley, but existing and new employees will move to the new building at Pinnacle Peak Road and Interstate 17.

Phoenix is anticipating a $50 million per year payroll from the expansion.

The incentive package is performance-based, and an investment of $1,000 for training will come from the city for each employee earning over $44,000 or more per year.

The funds will be reimbursed to Farmers over a 10-year hiring window. No funds are disbursed until the first 200 high-value employees are hired. The $500,000 is a cap the city set for the training reimbursements.

This makes Phoenix one of the largest regional offices for Farmers, a company with more than 19 million insurance policies and 48,000 agents across the country.

The matter is set for city council review and action Feb. 3. A spokesman from Farmers reached said in a statement, “Farmers Insurance has been exploring possible opportunities to expand our operational footprint in Phoenix. We do not have a specific timeline as to when we will make a final decision regarding this matter but hope to reach a decision soon.”

Arizona and Phoenix use a system for incentives by which payouts occur as reimbursement after companies achieve written milestones.
