15 Year growth projected. 18-20 million nuclear procedures performed annually. Current demand is 5 billion US dollars growing to 25 billion by 2030. Only one commercial facility in North America now scheduled for retirement in 2018. Short half life of isotopes means that the production facility must be relatively near the user. Department of Energy in the US cannot compete if commercially available product is available.
Equipment
Multiple companies produce a 70 MeV cyclotron. This is not new technology. Current supplier has built several of these.
Location
Goodyear Arizona has all the infrastructure needed, has approved the project and is lobbying to get the facility built there. Cancer Centers of America has agreed to buy isotopes from the Cyclotron facility and their hospital to allow immediate access to products as needed. Arizona uses Federal Regulations as their regulations so no need to get two approvals (State and federal).
