The city of Glendale is trying to make the process easier for small businesses and property owners seeking permits for improvements or expansions.

Glendale’s Building Safety Department has launched a new test program aimed at granting small business tenant improvement permits within 24 hours after submission.

The new efforts includes having a dedicated inspector to work with businesses. The expedited permits are for small businesses making improvements to structures of 7,000 square feet or less, and does not apply to medical offices and restaurants or businesses in historic districts.

“We expect to assist approximately 80 projects per year, which means each week, several small businesses will benefit from this new service which is in the best interest of the business community,” said city Building Safety Director Pam Wertz. City officials estimate it now takes up to eight working days for such permit approvals.

Glendale is also getting rid of permit requirements for homeowners replacing air conditioning units, coolers and hot water heaters if new units are of the similar size and have the same power source.

“A licensed contractor is still required to install these units and our history has not shown that replacing the unit with the same type and size of unit presents life safety concerns,” Wertz said.
